I quit after 29 years, smoking at the end, 2 packs per day.
I made a plan to quit, I scheduled an appointment with a Hypnotist, that day I was on my last pack. I cleaned the house, sprayed air freshner, washed all the ash trays, took out the garbage, cleaned out the ashtray in the truck.
The hypnotist took the last of the pack and my lighter (bic). When I got home there wasn't a smoke left in the house to temp me.
I drank LOTS of water and I would take MENTAL smoke break...ie..walk outside and just breath in the fresh air! That helped more than anything else.
Lastly I always think of how hard it was to quit, and that I didn't want to have to go through all that ever again, so the best way was to NEVER pick up a smoke...EVER again. Your body will heal if you can give it time.
Good luck, and we are here for you!

I quit 10 years ago. Tried everything, finally I tapered off over the course of 2 years..One day I bought a pack and had it in my shirt pocket. I noticed I hadn't opened it and it was lunch time...So I tried to see if I could make it till dinner..And so on..I carried that pack for 2 years. It was time.
The lungs will re-juvinate over 1 year, but the heart can't repair.. A good cigar won't kill you once a week.
Most people fail because they will have a smoke at a party or something and say they have failed, but consider this "triping over the steps of life" and get back at it..It's ok to trip once in a while..

I'm the worst sort of dumb-ass: I know all the answers, but... haven't done it. The fact is, I enjoy it and I'm not ready to quit yet.

Dang dude, It's a tough thing. I did the same thing for years I'd quit for a month here and there and always came back. Made it two years once and picked it back up during a divorce.
I tried Zyban several years ago and it worked like a charm. I had quit smoking within the first two weeks of taking it. 11 months later I went to Jamaica and let's just say that I picked up smoking again. I was impressed with Zyban though and in 2004 I decided to try it again. It didn't work at all that time. I then did an event with Squibb Pharma and it was with some of their muckity mucks up in Jackson Hole. While standing outside having a smoke one of their VP's came out to hit up the Blackberry and told me that "Those things are gonna kill ya" I mentioned my experience with Zyban since they make the product and she said they had many cases of people building a resistance to it after using it once. She told me to try Zyban with the Patch (which they also make) and I told her it sounded like some self serving advice, and she insisted that I give it a try after talking to a doctor of course. I did.
I have to say that every time I tried to quit it was the hardest thing I had ever done and I usually failed. using The patch along with Zyban was really easy and it weened me off the cigs and then took care of the cravings as well.
I do know that my desire to quit was stonger than it had ever been, as well, so I am sure that had a lot to do with it, but cold turkey just never stuck with me.
I hope whatever you do sticks cause it's nice to taste and smell again.

Quit 7 1/2 years ago (cold turkey) after 30+ years of a pack a day of those Cowboy Killers. Had lots of practice having tried so several hundred times before. Put on 58lbs. (My 6pak turned into a keg! ) I could go right back to that pack a day anytime ... so, the temptation is always there. Wish I could moderate that habit to just a few when I'm out or having a drink (which is rare anyways). Hardest thing I've ever done in my life is to quit smoking cigarettes. And I been thru a couple of divorces, raised teenagers, volunteered to serve during VN and spent time in a brig or two. Truly it is a feat of accomplishment that deserves recognition and I applaud everyone that has done it. BRAVO ZULU and HooYah!
Someone mentioned a good cigar every once and again won't hurt you and, you know, they're right. They're not inhaled anyway.
Thank God I can still curse like a sailor!
(edit: And the only way those patches were to work on me was if I were to staple them on my lips! )
