Sadly, most people can't manage to drive on four wheels on a 100' wide piece of asphalt without being spastic about it. Imagine if hundreds of them began taking to the air? I vaguely remember a rotary-engined craft that had large fans in the wings for STOL-like characteristics. I don't think they made it into production. Like pulling up to a light on a 3 lane road in the middle lane.
