which luggage rack? 5 Years, 4 Months ago
Hey y'all! I'd really appreciate any advise/input on this. I'm looking at 2 different luggage racks and am not sure which would be better. STR-4WM51-10-01 seems to put too much weight on the license plate thingie. STR-5VP51-30-00 attaches to the existing backrest mount instead of the tail light assembly. Any experience/thoughts to share with me? Thanks in advance.

Given the Yamaha stated 10# weight limit either would be okay BUT I went with the STR-5VP51-30-00 and have carried over 10# with no problems

Welcome!

Regards, Ted

That's the one I'm leaning toward. It makes more sense to me to use the backrest mount, which is sturdier than the license plate bracket. Thanks for the help.

Go with the backrest mount one...

The other is for those that dont have a backrest mount

Yup. That does make sense. Okey dokey. The backrest mount luggage rack is the one for me. Thanks, guys! And, Pop Rivet, I gave you a little karma boost for that one!

My first long trip with my roadstar caused me great concern. As you stated the rack does say 10lbs max. I was traveling for 8 two up we had or travel bag filled to the top. Also the bag is a big leather bag and weighs more then the Tbags.
I had a lot of weight on the rack and was concerned if the rack could hold it. It did with NP and since that trip I have made several other long trips with no problems. I think they put 10LBS on it to cover their butts (lawsuits) and all.
It can handle more then 10LBS I would not worry about it.

Use the one that doesn't connect to the license plate bracket. It's the one that I have:

It's a much cleaner look, too.

Good luck!

Re:which luggage rack? 2 Years, 8 Months ago
I realize this is an old post but I'm looking at the str-5vp51-30-00
luggage rack. Will this fit right up with my factory sissy bar ?
I have the shorter studded one, is there any additional hardware
required ? If so what would I need ?
Thanks,
Chris

They told me at the dealership that the one that mounts to the plate is for the older R*'s. The one that mounts to the luggage rack is for the '03 or the '04 and up. If it mounts to the luggage rack I think it will fit the short sissy bar. My brother has a short rest and it fits on his '07.
