I never ran a Lb over the weight rating or the recommended PSI for the max weight I ran. For a tire man you know very little are spanish tyre's different? I posted link after link on tire pressures. Post me some links that say run tires 15 20 Lbs on the low side. And if you want to be able to run lower air pressures erizo, Try a Car tire. You give an opinion and never post any links to back it up. I need a link on running 35 PSI with 840Lbs on an Avon Rear Tire. Heck A Metz, A Dunlop, A Bridgestone, any MC tire.

Tires offering different load-carrying capacities are available. Consider carefully the weight of the motorcycle, the weight of any optional equipment and whether it will carry passengers. Remember, the load- carrying capability of the tires is also reduced by underinflation. It is possible to overload a tire even though it is the size specified by the motorcycle manufacturer. Maximum loads and corresponding pressures are indicated on the sidewall of all Dunlop street tires.


Never exceed the accessory restrictions and vehicle load capacity found in the motorcycle owner's manual, or the maximum load molded on the tire sidewall. Before a trip, be sure to determine the total weight of luggage, equipment, and rider(s) to be added to the motorcycle

Low air = friction = Heat = blowout.
Proper air for weight = no worries.
Do you know the weight on your tire?
Do you know the Max PSI? If you run Max weight you must also run Max PSI.
Facts facts facts.

And yes I did run over 3000 miles in the dead of summer SOUTH over 90 about every day and never blew a tire, and the rear one was field plugged! Had I ran 35 PSI it would have blown before I left.

he asked about the excessive tyre wear, and i gave an opinion as to what i believed to be the reason.

Not winding my neck at all, You install tires and you tell people to inflate them too low. That's wrong, I don't want people to believe you. You never post a link. I do. Can you read the 1st sentence of this article on MC tire pressure? http://tinyurl.com/erizoiswrong

According to the above web site, AND the picture of my tire, I got the MOST out of that tire @ max recommended pressure running near the maximum recommended weight on that tire.

This is an informational site, passing misinformation while titling yourself as a tire expert could dangerously mislead readers. I'm just posting links that steer people in the right direction concerning tire pressures and weight rating so they have the knowledge and know how to choose a tire for the weight they intend to run, and inflate it for that weight and consider tire pressures when adding weight.

As described in above link, before you buy a tire 1st thing you need to know is how much max weight will ever be on that tire. If your tire man don't ask that, RUN. 2nd is the speed rating, Chart in one of above links. If you don't know how much weight is on your rear tire LOADED you need to know people, And you need to know how much air to put in for that weight. If it's a Big cruiser with two up and gear for a weekend, your going to have close to Max weight for that tire on the rear. From what I know, you'll never overload a front tire simply because you can't get that much weight up there and it will normally come in about 200 to 300 below Max weight rating.

"•Keep in mind that these recommendations are usually dependent upon the weight of you and your passenger, as well as any cargo. For instance, some manufacturers advise adding 3 or 4 PSI when carrying
a heavy load. Know your vehicle weight and load, and follow the PSI recommendations specific to your motorcycle. Failure to do so can result in adverse motorcycle handling (wobble and weave) or tire failure, or both."


Thanks for the opportunity to enlighten everyone, hope they peek into the links and see for themselves they need to consider PSI seriously.

And just a footnote, The tire that came on my bike was rated for 60LBS less than the max weight at Max PSI than I would run on it for a weekend trip.


If you don't know how much weight is on your rear, You can't intelligently choose a PSI.


And you only need two weights to figure it ALL out, The total weight minus the rear tire weight will equal the front tire weight. Load your bike up and go weigh it. THEN figure what PSI to run.

Pass the right info and back it up, or pass none at all IMHO.

went to the car tyre shop today and asked a few questions and he was very helpful,made some calls and has come up with 175/75/16,one a van tyre the other for a car,both radials and will look some more for me,can I still run my metz 880 on the front do car tyres feel any different for the passenger who must be obeyed

THe Darkside Database http://darkside.nwff.info/database.php (hope it works.) lists tires that have been mounted on a Road* I have the Comtrac 175 75 16 and it has plenty of clearance even with a custom rear fender as I have seen it mounted on a 01 and it also clears that.

There is nothing for the passenger to do while riding they don't do on a MC tire. Yes you can feel it's a radial and it takes some time (Took me 1300 miles) to get totally used to it and surpass curve speeds you had on a MC tire. You have to get used to the transition of going form center of tire to transferring weight to one side of the tread when in a sharp curve. You won't loose any traction while doing so although your mind and seat of your pants wants to tell you so. Once you get used to it, You'll be certain.

If I was in your neck of the woods a Car tire on the rear would certainly be in order as they have LOTS more traction under all conditions and are quite a bit tougher. (Construction wise and weight rating.) And much more easily repaired on the path.

As for the Front>
You can run a regular tire and I did for a while just to see,
But as the darkside forum suggests, You get much better handling from a rear tire mounted in reverse rotation on the front. That info is also in the darkside FAQ information folder but I will post.


Rear tires can be mounted at front wheels?
When producing tires, the top cap is heated with an angle bump on the carcass. To prevent the detachment of the assembled edges the tire has to be mounted (concerning the main stress: acceleration force at the rear wheel or brake force at the front wheel) corresponding to the respective declaration.
Therefore the declaration of the driving direction at the tires� sidewall is a very important safety regard and has to be noticed absolute. It is not allowed to mount front tires at rear wheels.

In case you intend to mount a rear tire on a front wheel it has to be assembled contrary to the driving direction declaration (direction of the arrow at the tires� sidewall). Please observe the standards in your country. In any doubts we kindly ask you to consult your dealer.

To do over i would do the front and rear at same time because having a worn front and not so sticky front can spoil the handling of the Darkside rear IF you bang into corners and curves. Remember that a rear tire has a lot more meat than a front and that tire will last much longer in a front running position, I would guess and easy 25K plus.

I used a Rear Pirelli MT66 on the front same size as what is called for. Note that it will be slightly wider and the curvature is less, this more nearly matches the Car tire in the rear and that is why it handles so much better in addition to it's "sticky" characteristics.

PM Schatzie for your questions regarding Passengers, She has about 4K miles as a Passenger on my rear Car Tire.
Makcap has also seen me banging curves in stockport two up and loaded through some very tough curves comparable to the dragon and it handled very well. He even bought rims and tires to go darkside and is a darksider now breaking his in.

If you search Darkside, it's nothing new, Motorcycles started out on Car Tires. It was racing that lead us to the type tires we now run. Just as racing lead us to spoilers on street cars, K&N air filters on street cars, (Cough) low profile tires on street cars, Mag rims, and so on.

You will find many other motorcycle darkside forums for Gold wing and many others. Just not a lot of Road* owners doing it YET.
