question for the pros 1 Year, 10 Months ago
Do engine guards do anything to protect the bike or are they just for looks? Any suggestions on which ones are better than others since there are so many of them out there. Also, what about visors for headlights and instrument panels.... Do they come loose and rattle over time or no?? Just seems to me that sort of stuff would. The final question I guess ... What is your opinion no "engine covers" and starter end cap cover" and all that other chrome stuff. Waste of time and money or does it really make the bike sharpe and stand out?????

Engine guards protect the engine and to some extent other parts. They can also save your leg if you low side too but the mfg's can't say that becausae of lawsuits. Haven't had them all so I can't comment on the quality of them all. I like my Yami big Bars. If you are ever going to put floorboard ext's on you are limited to Yami Big bar, Barons bar, or the roadking bar.

Visors. It's been my experience that if you get the universals you get rattles. I bought the star visors for all my lights and not one rattle. I would do the same for the speedo visor.

As for the rest of the chrome goodies. If you like the looks and want more chrome to have to keep shined up then go to town.

So endeth my 2 cents.

Sit on your bike and tip it over but don't pull your leg out. Now put an engine guard on there and do the same thing. Let me know which hurt worse.

Post edited by: Musky, at: 2007/01/26 15:56

I have the Lindby bar, and it is sharp and useful. I know it protects in a gas station tip-over, and the quality is good. As far as extra chrome, suit your self, but I'm trying to figure ways to lighten up my bikes, rather than pretty them up.

Snowman do I have a story for you! You can decide after you read it. Several months ago I was riding to work on a 4 line road inthe 2nd lane from the left. Stopped at a red light light changed guy in front was really poking along. Look in my mirror downshifted and cracked the throttle.Make a long story short crashed into the right door of a car blasting up the left lane. Thought to myself got to get away from this guy and cracked it wide open at 40 mph. Got away from him bike got high speed woddle and pray to the biker god stay up baby settle down. Guess what, she did pulled off the road exchanged insurance and drove on to work. The crash bar was a little bent but no other damage to the bike or me except my arm was sore from cleaning his mirror off. Can't say the same for his car, tore his door all up bad and broke his mirror off. I tried to fix the bar by driving my truck over it but it wouldn't bend back so I just bought a new one. I will never ride without one. It was a Barons highway bar and I paid $180 for the new one. I was also run off the road at 70 mph in England and had bars front and rear on my Triumph 500. Me and my buddie were just scratched and the bike was OK only broke the rear bar loose on the bottom. SOOOOO you make up you own mind. As for chrome it is nice if placed in the right places black is nice too.
