My First Oil Change 3 Years, 4 Months ago
I am at my 600 mile oil change. After all the reading here I am still undecided on which oil to use so I decided to just use the Yamalube. Well, the dealer was out so I went down to the auto parts store and bought some Castrol 4T 10W-40 Motorcycle oil. It has a SPI rating of SH,SG and JASO MA. Now, for the gear box I bought Castrol Hypoy-C Motorcycle Gear Oil 80W-90. It exceeds GL-5 and MT-1. Before I put this in my machine I thought I would run this info past the clinic here and see if anyone has had any experience with this oil and/or if anyone would have reason to recommend that I don't use these two oils.

Re:My First Oil Change 3 Years, 4 Months ago
In my short time on this clinic I have seen many discussion on motor oil and there are plenty of opinions to be considered. I use one oil and am a little bit biased on it. I just did an oil change at 20000 miles on Friday of last week and I used AMSOIL's 10-w-40 Motorcycle oil. It is all I have ever put in the bike and my bike seems to like it very much. With that said I only put one type of oil in my bike not a seperate one for the gear oil. I think you will be fine with your choice of the 10-w-40 but the gear box oil is another issue and I'd like to see who chimes in with what on that one.

Thanks for the reply. The owners manual calls for 80W-90 gear oil for the transfer case which is typical gear lube. I just wondered if anyone had any problems with the Castrol products. I hope your not running motor oil in your gear box. If so, you need to get it out of there and put 80W or 90W gear oil in it. 40W is way too light for a gear box. You may get away with it for a while in cooler climates but a gear box with 40W wouldn't last 1 mile down here in a Texas summer.

Whew! You didn't put the Yamalube in! Info here, take your pick!
https://www.amsoil.com/lit/g391.pdf Everyone is different depending on needs, wants, plans, cost, benefit, features, time, and the list goes on. Like how many times do you want to do it a season.

Is Yamalube a bad thing? If so, why? I don't want to go with synthetic yet. I want to wait until it get's more miles on it. I may go with it on the next oil change. Any problems with synthetics and wet clutches?

Whatever brand oil you want to use is up for debate. 1 certaintee is use synthetic is sure quiets the motor down.

None that I have heard of. I ran the Yamalube synthetic myself. I didnt have any trouble with it. But SM is right, the oil you choose is very subjective and you will get many different opinions on which brand you should run.

Yeah I know but I want to hear them. So tell me what you all use and why you choose this oil. What makes it better in your opinion.

you might as well go to synthetic...you cant use synthetic during break-in because you need the extra friction to break in the motor properly..but after that first few hundred changing to synthetic sooner might even be better than waiting

personally i use amsoil but im switching to mobil 1 next spring for no good reason really
i will say though that during the winter i always change my oil right before i store the bike...and for that i always use regular cheapo oil because it only gets a few miles and its good to get all that gunk outta the bike before it sits

Mobil 1 15w-50 in the 5qt. jug at Wal*Mart. Great value. Far cheaper than any other synthetic purchase.

Mobil 1 gear oil in the transfer case... some 13.45 ozs., if I remember correctly.

Works for me, and I've been using the 15-50 in all my air-cooled engines for 27 years! None have ever failed or worn out.
