With a filter you worry more about a catastrophic failure than a failure over time. My Nephew had a BMW and darted into Wal Mart & figured what they hey shop and get oil change. About 2 miles later the engine blew, turned out a seal in the filter come loose and blocked the flow of oil. A mechanic discovered this and turned said filter over to lawyer who got him a new BMW no questions asked from Fram Just wanted filter to verify. This took 3 months, and that was 3 months no BMW.
The price of a good filter could be minimal. But people get away with marginal filters all the time. I'm not much into gambling.
Read link above, make your choice. I use a Amsoil Chrome for 8K miles with Amsoil Syn.
I'd use a K&N and maybe a Mobile one extended life Oil filter in a jam, But thats it fo rme.
I do spur of the moment long trips and adverse weather and riding conditions. Always ready.

I don't think it is I use dawn and rinse blow it out as directed. It also give you a picture into what's going on in your engine. A twist a toss you never really see. IMHO You can clean with other cleaners also. I've always gone with kiss Keep it Simple Stupid it's a fire service thing. Least toxic works use it if it needs more then go beyond.
Sure it takes a little longer for an oil change, but once you use this filter it's worth the time and effort.
It comes with it's own filter wrench easy on easy off and it looks great.
