HELP custum roadstar cranking problems 3 Years, 3 Months ago
I have a 1999 roadstar 1600 with hi comp pistons, Its always been hard to start when the engine is hot, turns over very slow like a dead battery. Iv installed a odessy battery 550 cold cranking amps , New cables, New starter. The only conclusion I can reach is the comp release must not be working. I checked the seliod, relay etc, its all working. I pulled the cover and checked the arm and pins. Its all seems to be working. My ? is what further inside the engine would stop the comp release from working. thanks

Not the answer to your question , but did you upgrade the starter to the Warrior starter?

thanks Bigbear , No stock replacement. Ultrastar I went one size up on cables. Its always turned over slow like a dead battery, twice it even kicked back and I had to remove the starter hub and reset the oneway clutch, put it back on and it started, when it kicks back and back spines the one way clutch the starter spins freely. I own Davis Motorsports and brdracing.com, Have been building racing engines for 32 years but this ones kicking my but.

The Warrior starter is a popular replacement for that exact issue. Might be your Answer. BB

try lapping the starter gear to the shaft, that should solve that problem, as far as the starter goes, the warrior is a lot better, the R* starter is marginal at best...and with the HC pistons, it will never turn it over as well as you would like....

Not ? you, But Ireally beleive its a comp relaese issue. I cand remove the stater cover place a 3/4 drive socket and rachet on the engine remove the cam cover press the comp release rods all the way in and the engine turns the same, Its like its not releasing the comp

Here's an article that may help.........Starter What you can do is get some valve lapping compound like used for lapping valves and put it on the starter shaft, then take the gear/clutch and twist it on the shaft until it mates up to the shaft tighter..basicly it's a fine grinding procedure that will get you a tighter fit..
