Re:Fuel Mileage 2 Years, 11 Months ago
Well after all of he messing around here is where I am at now. Stock jet of 182.5 and in the 3rd clip from blunt end PMS at 2 1/2 out and the big thing think was we checked the float level. When I tried the ODO method it looked right but we went ahead and tested with the plastic tubing and we were way igh. We adjusted the float and tested it and I was getting 42 mpg, alot better than when the needle was at the 5th clip, that was 34 mpg. It is hard to believe that moving the needle down into the jet would make a 25% difference. All of my mileage was tested at 70 mph. I made one last tweek and dropd the needle 1 more clip co I an now at teh 2nd from the blunt end. I went for a pleasere ride at 60 mph and this time I got 49 mpg. I will test it out this wek as I head to Oregon. I have learned alot in the past couple of days, thanks for your help.

I would like to comment to all who have posted that MPG is not a concern to them. There have been a couple or more. If you would think it through, MPG is more than it appears. It is an indication of how the engine is running. I am concerned about MPG because it tells me if the fuel mixture is adjusted correctly. If everyone is getting 40 to 50 MPG and I am getting 18 MPG, yes, that is a concern for me. Something is very different there, and I want to know why. As it turns out, it appears my low fuel mileage was due to the fact my bike was new. As mileage increased and it got broken in, fuel mileage increased.

Due to engine milage, actual curb weight, riding conditions and rider habits, going by what other get MPG wise isn't necessarily a very good barometer. I keep a loose track on what I am getting in case it changes drastically. I guess I missed where you were getting 18 mpg. I think the lowest I saw you post was about 24-28 mpg, and on the worst tank it appears you ran a new/tight eingine over 100 mph, so all bets are off. IMHO

I got tired at some point trying to get the milage I see here on the site. The best I ever remember getting is around 42mpg.I normally get between 32 and 39 mpg,two up or solo.I`m currently running a 167.5 main,Dyno neddle on 3rd clip and 3 pms.The thing I do take into account is here in Vegas I`m at about 2000 ft. and anywhere I go riding to i go up 3000 to 5000 ft.,so how do you adjust for that. Been thinking of going to the 165 main jet
but haven`t made up my mind

Also when I bought my bike I had no choice bit to drive it from
L.A.Ca. back to Vegas,about 300 miles.I did like 65 or 70 mile
and went through like 3/4 of a tank.Stopped had a nice long
breakfast.I filled her back up and my mileage pretty much went to normal.I did keep her under 70 and varied my speed up and down as
best I could To date I`ve never had "any real issues" with my baby
that weren`t caused by me.The one time I thought I had SVS it ended up being avery dirty fuel filter.

And I never"Baby My Baby"my speed is usually 65 to 80 MPH and at
some point during my ride I like to "Ring her Out" Luv My RD*

167.5 , I fixed it Doc

I`m currently running a 176.5 main

I assume that you mean 167.5 ... as there is no such thing as a 176.5 and you may drop to a 165.

I would not expect to get as good gas mileage at 2000' vs sea level. You can dial the carb down to account for the thinner air but you also have less power as the elevation goes up.

You should be comparing your mileage to someone like roadkill.
