How long could a Roadie stay perched on an 8" x 8" railroad tie, assuming it's on the center of the frame? Thought it might be easier to work on that way. Got a MC jack, but I'd really be pissed if the bike came over on me whilst I was repairing it.

Thanks,

Are we talking a RR tie that has been removed from the tracks? If not then I think the train schedule has a lot to do with how long you can leave the bike there.

What's wrong the the jack? I think the support area of the jack is larger than 8 inches isn't it?

Forever.

I had mine raised off the ground all winter on a 6" piece of wood.

Teeters nicely.

While it hasn't happened to me, it seems that motorcycle jacks tend to, over time, lose a bit of the lift capability in the piston and motorcycles tend to come down...unexpectedly. My jack does have the safety bar that locks in place in a number of various heights which would in theory make it perfectly safe, but...it, like everything else, was made in China. Just doesn't instill a world of confidence. I'm cool with it being on there up in the air for a few hours, but I'm looking to put it up and do a bunch of work over the next month, and I've NEVER heard of wood deflating or losing oil pressure or busting a seal.

Good advice RK, I don't know how much faith I have in that locking mechanism either. I know when I jack mine up I always bungie cord from the the bike to my work bench so it will hopefully pull the bike in the direction of the side stand just in case the jack did fail. Sounds good in theory, I hope I never find out if it works.
