low fuel light on all the time 3 Years, 3 Months ago
99 yamaha roadstar silverado

bike was stored with fuel stable and a full tank.
turned bike on for the first time since i put it in to storage.

unpluged battery tender, cycled the ign. waited till the gauges did there thing, started the bike up and my low fuel light stays on, is this a normal problem that i can fix my self,

I figured the light would go out. but i had the bike running for a bout 15 mins, to warm it up when the light didnt go out i turned the bike off, figureing i might be messing up the bikes sensors.

thank you
Tom

Disconnect the battery for a minute or two, then put it back on + first, then Ground (-), start it up and let it run for about 2 or 3 minutes, it should go off. You'll have to reset your clock too.

Is the gage itself working? I have a 99 as well and my light was on and the gage was not working. I just posted a write up on how I fixed it. If its just the light I am not sure.

the gauge works fine, i think its reading full, and the tank is topped off. I'll try the unhooking the battery,
I have had the bike hooked up to the battery tender and hooked up to the bike, could have the battery tender messed up the ECU.

I have a 99 Roadie and I am having a similar problem. My low fuel light flashes for a while then turns off then comes on and stays on for a while. Also my gauge isn't working. What the H&ll is the problem?

OK if the gage is not working try this before you drop the $$ for the new sender unit.

OK, so I had to take off the gas tank last night (for other reasons than the fuel level sender), while I had it off I thought well I am going to check out this fuel level sender (since my no longer works) pulled it off and everything looked fine....but then I pulled the keeper off so I could take the float off, and realized that the terminals had 2 things wrong, they were flat and only making contact half the time, and 2 they were dirty. So I bent the prongs up so they make contact all the time and I cleaned the prongs and the board they touch with an eraser (used to do the same thing with the old NES games)

Anyway, this easy fix saved me the cost of the new sender (60 or something like that) so I wanted to share in hopes of saving someone else some change.

Sorry for not having pictures it was kind of spur of the moment so I was not prepared.

If anyone has questions let me know and I can try and get some pics.

Thanks for the info ConnerNA, hadn't thought of sending unit, figured it was the gauge itself. Will try your way first.

Another consideration would be the connection for the gauge. Remove the 3 screws holding down the panel and unplug the panel. With a good electronics's cleaner and a nylon brush (or some other non metallic brush) and reassemble. A little corrosion on an electrical plug will cause havoc on it's function.

Conner is right electrolsis build up on therminals and plugs will screw things up. Clean all electrical connections first before replacing parts.
