Well now that my bike is out of warranty I am thinking about using synthetic oil. I use Mobil 1 in my truck I had a S10 that had 247000 on it when I sold it. The guy that bought changed the timing chain and said it look like new inside no gunk. It now has over 300000 and no major engine work. I have used Yamaha oil up to this point but want to switch. I also would like to use a filter other than the Yamaha but not sure which one would be best. If any one has used Mobil 1 oil and a filter other than Yamaha with any luck I would like to hear about it. Thanks!

Curt,

Get ready for a whole bunch of opinions on oil and filters. I have discovered through this forum that there are a many options that are OK. I use AmsOil synthetic 20W-50 Vtwin oil and the Yamaha filter. I switched to synthetic at the break-in service. I also noticed that the engine ran much quieter on the new oil.

Hey Curt

Nope. ain't doin it. Almost got into it again Here's a list of filters for the roadie. I've heard the Fram is the ultimate in junk.

Amsoil ……………………… (SMF103) chrome (SMF103C)
Bosch ……………………… (3300) (3330) (3323)
Mobil One…………………… M108
BOSCH……………………….3300 3323
K&N…………………………….KN-303
NAPA GOLD……………...1358
PUROLATOR……………….ML16817
STP…………………………...SDF13
WIX…………………………..51358
FRAM………………………...6017A
HASTINGS…………………LF-113
HI FLO………………………HF-303
EMGO……………………….10-82220
PER-FORM…………………J-503
Super Tech………………..ST7317 (Wal-Mart)
The Wal-Mart ST 6607 is a little smaller than the stock filter and the 7317
is maybe a half inch longer. Both will work fine, your preference.
Oil Drain Crush Washers: The thread diameter is 14mm; the wrench size is
17mm, so you would need a washer with a 14mm inside diameter.

Post edited by: Musky, at: 2007/02/10 07:42

I switched to Mobil 1 and the Super Tech filter at 600 miles, all seems well. I did notice with length of the Super Tech filter I won't be able to use my filter wrench to get it off. It's so long there's no room left to get it on.

Mobil 1 V-Twin 20/50 did the trick for me. Haven't heard a peep out of the engine since changing over.

I also was thinking of changing over to synthetic oil and give it a try. I heard someone say that the synthetic runs hotter than regular oil, just wondering if there is any truth to this?

Hey digger

I think usually if people notice a difference in temp it's cooler.

Man trying to find Mobil 1 VTwin 20W50 oils and K@N oil filter at any place other than a bike shop is next to imposable around here. Guess I am going to have to go to a bike shop after all. There goes the price!
