and ANOTHER jetting question! 5 Years, 3 Months ago
|
|
Hey Guys!
Need your experience-
I have an '05 Road Star (black AND white, so let's be impartial). I put Speedsatar dragpipes on it late in the Fall. One Yammy dealership said I wouldn't need to jet OR drill out airscrew. Another delership said id I'd need both.
Well, it ran like crap without drilling the airscrew, so I had it drilled. Pipes sound great (at least as good as any Hog around here!), but it's waaay too lean, and runs cold as a Polar Bear's privates. The mechanic who drilled and set the airscrew said I'd still need a jet kit. One of the guys I ride with said he went thru the same problem with his '05, and he'd never re-jet again if he had to do it over (besides losing 8 mpg).
So, what's you guys opinions? I have the Speedstar jet kit sitting on the shlef ready to install while we're during Winter down-time, but...Also, I have the AIS plugs/removal instructions, which I plan on installing at the same time.
Appreciate you fellas input. Just signed up to Clinic recently-enjoy reading your tips!
Road(star) Rules!

Well now that you have some free flowing exhaust, which in any case may sound great, you are going to need to get a better flowing intake and have your carb jetted correctly in order to gain your mileage back. I installed a set of pipes and a Barons big air kit at the same time, had it jetted according to the instructions and I actually gained 3 mpg. With both of those accesories together, your bike will run more efficient.

Typically, you don't re-jet with an exhaust upgrade. At most, a tweak of the PMS is all you need.
When you upgrade the airkit, then you definitely need to re-jet.
Hope that helps.

Thanks-not familiar with the Barons Big Air Kit.
does it replace the manifold, or is it an air cleaner kit only?
What, if any, effect does removing the AIS have on dialing in the airscrew/rejetting?

The BAK is just and air cleaner. but it does come with a jet kit that includes Mikuni jets and a new adjustable needle. Very easy to work with. If you click on my bike pics you can see what it looks like. Removing the AIS doesn't affect anything as far as the carb goes. The 2 things removing it does is unclutter the front of you motor and cut down on decel popping.

Baron's Big Air Kit ( BAK) is just the airbox and filter. The manifold is a different story - you can buy a Nemesis, Ben Herr Chariot or a Baron's ported manifold. It's pricey, but you get a nice power boost with the manifold upgrade.
May I also suggest the Max Air MaxFlo Air Kit. Like the Baron kit, it also comes with a jet kit. It looks way cooler, has better airflow and costs alot less $$$.
Removing the AIS serves to clean up the left side of the bike, but it also helps to eliminate backfire while decelerating.
Good luck.

Post edited by: 06MidnightStar, at: 2007/02/14 14:46

What is happening to make you think it's lean? What's your mileage? Since the brass plug has been taken care of it's easy to tweak the PMS if you need to. It would help to know what the PMS is set at right now. Just switching pipes shouldn't change how your bike runs much if everything got put together right so there are no air leaks.

N2 I have an 05 R* and I had the dealer install a Hypercharger when I bought it. They never could get it right after three trips to the dealership they still didn't have it right. Day 364 of my warrenty I bought the BAK because it ran like crap. I said to hell with their $75 an hr and did the BAK install myself. I found the carb half way out of the intake the carb heater wire off and flopping in the wind. When I opened the carb it had the 182.5 main which is the stock jet. I put the BAK on and put the 172.5 in like BAK called for but set the needle clip in the 4th grove instead of 5th like BAK called for. Still wasn't right but was a lot closer. I tried the 170 main didn't work put the 172.2 back in and set the clip on the needle 5th grove like BAK said. It runs great now. I have HKK2 pipes with home made glasspac baffles, BAK, ported stock manifold and Barons PMS. The advice IS... Leave the 172.5 main in adjust the PMS and don't mess with anything else unless you want to try moving the clip on the needle. If you don't have many miles on it just ride the crap out of it and things will settle in. Me I love to tinker I am a ex jet engine mechanic turned coputer jocky.

Post edited by: Curt, at: 2007/02/17 12:19
