Adjusting the rear spring 3 Years, 2 Months ago

Can anyone tell me how to stiffen the rear spring on my 08 roadie. I can see the adjustment, but getting to it is the problem. Is there a special tool? Any help is appreciated.

Yes you can adjust it you need a spanner wrench which I believe comes in your tool kit (or a large channel locks will work in a pinch) If you look under the bike at the shock you will see a thin nut and a threaded section tighten the nut and increase the stiffness. This did not work for me I bought Progessive's spring upgrade and have never regretted it

Mine is adjusted all the way down, and i did the flip and grind. It works fine while one up I haven't bottomed out yet, but i'm nervous about going two up. Do you think adjusting it up would prevent that?

MNfreak, I did the flip and grind and ride 2^ with no problems
however I am just shy of 200 lbs and wifey is 120.
Could be more of a problem if you are a big guy, or
have a big gal.

Don't know about how it'd feel or work after the flip but I'm about 300# (on a bad day) and I adjusted mine about to the max. Seems a bit stiffer. They're rated at 725 - 750 pounds I think. I'm gonna go with an after market spring this year probably just for piece of mind.

Like they all said is true. To get the stock spring from bottoming out you have to crank the crap out of it. Loosen the lock nut and start turning the nut resting against the spring its self.Go as far as you want....it wont hurt it any. The problem is it takes all the "plush" feel out of the travel. I replaced mine w/ the PCS progressive but I can't tell you how it works cause my bike is waiting for paint New spring is cheep and easy to swap

I did the flip and grind on my silverado and while I did OK by myself whenever the wife was two up with me I had to slow way down and ease through the corners. Went to the heavier spring and never had the problem with bottoming out or scraping the frame again. I recomend the spring change.

Hello Larry, it takes a 32mm wrench. Just lay down beside your bike and put the wrench on the lock nut. I lightly tap the wrench with a rubber mallet to get this nut loosened. Then tighten the first nut down a few turns and then lock down with the second nut. Test drive. You may have to do this several times to get the desired results.
I purchased a set of metric service wrenches from Harbor Freight that are great for working on the road*. I only see the SAE set listed on their website but my local harborfreight had both sets in stock. Here is some info on them.
Classic farmer's style service wrench set. Super heavy-duty construction with narrow heads for access in tight spots. Drop forged, machined, heat treated and chrome plated chrome vanadium steel construction. 30° offset heads
Here is a picture of what they look like.
