Excess Belt Noise 1 Year, 9 Months ago
Hi All,
My first post so please be gentle. I am not sure if it is normal or not as I have just bought my 2001 R* after owning a Heritage Softail. I am well impressed with it so far but I am a little concerned about excess belt noise when cruising. Is this normal? I tried some soap on the edges of the belt which helped a little. Any ideas? I have also ordered a Dyna 3000 from the States and look forward to fitting it. Half the price to what we pay in Australia. Also has anyone out there got Aussie Formula One pipes like me. Not loud enough and I was after any hints to make them louder without to much drama. The baffles are riveted on as well. Sorry about the long question......

Welcome Spiro and congrats on the Roadie

Check to see if the belt is riding up against the side of the rear pulley. If it is - Check the rear wheel allignment. If those are OK - Check the belt tension.

Thanks Musky,
I know the tension of the belt was right, not sure about the wheel alignment though, I will check. I just had it serviced and nothing was said but that doesn't mean much nowadays. I did mention the noise but wasn't sure if it was belt or rear wheel bearing at the time.

Hey Musky, I notice my belt is more to one side of the pulley so it might be riding up,not sure how to check, I got the mechanic to check the alignment when it was serviced last week and he said it was fine.

This site has the owners manual and service manuals. You adjust how the belt runs by adjusting the rear wheel allignment. you should read through them and becaome familar with the basics of your bike. A lot of the things you pay a wrench to do are easy once you know how.

What kind of noise?

I notice my belt is more to one side of the pulley so it might be riding up

Don't worry unless it excessive - you will get a kind of 'squeek' (especially if you push it) if it's too tight on one side as the belt tries to run up the side of the pulley. If you want to move the belt then tighten the adjuster on the side that the belt is touching .... if it's touching the left side then tighten the adjuster 1/8 of a turn.

Don't get too anal about getting it to run center-line pulley; it's tough and sometimes impossible.
