pet carriers 3 Years, 2 Months ago

hey all, not sure if this is the correct place to post this or not but I saw a tech article about pet carriers in the tech corner so here goes. I have a yamaha V-star which I recently bought and I am considering getting a dog. I'd like a larger dog, but have concerns about him riding with me. The only carriers i've seen that would hold a large dog (other than a side car) are the beast rider dog seats.
Has anyone used these before? Any comments about them would be appreciated. My concerns are primarily the comfort of the dog. I'm curious as to just how comfortable a large dog would be sitting in it, as well as the maximum trip lengths people have taken with them (my max. trip would be about 2 and a half hours, with stops for the dog of course). Another concern is how much the dog affects the balance of the ride if he becomes fidgity. I understand that these are not as safe as an enclosed carrier which is why I would also purchase goggles and helmet while taking extra precautions on the road. If anyone could tell me about their experiences with these types of carriers, I would be very greatful. Thanks.
Eddie

Hey esander
I think Two Sheds here used to take his dog on extended trips. Do a search, and should pull up something.

I dont know how big your dog is but I have the large size Moto-Pet.com carrier for my bike. I had a medium size one but gave it to a friend who had one of those soft sided carriers that came undone and (Luckily his dog was ok after it fell off the bike. He later had an accident while on the bike with the carrier I gave him and the carrier saved his pets life. He went right out and bought a new one because of how well it worked.
I take BobE with me everywhere on the bike and he loves traveling.
I have not seen anyone who uses the carrier you talk about but there are several sites that you can go to to ask questions. One of them is www.bikerdogs.com (that will get you to several other sites) these folks can answer your questions and there are tons of pictures for you to see and compare also.
God bless
John

Thank you all for the welcomes to the clinic.
Darn Oldie: I've only read about the dog helmets, but i've seen several dogs wearing goggles while riding. The other day I saw an irish setter sitting up tall in a sidecar wearing goggles and completely enjoying the ride.
If I find any info or wind up buying the seat i saw, I'll post some reviews of it for those of you considering riding with a dog.
Revrent, I don't have a dog yet but i'm considering adopting a pitbull terrier puppy from a local shelter.

In August of '08, I lost my travel dog to an unrelated illness. She was 6 years old, and had traveled in 8 states and over 18000 miles on my bike. I used a home made crate that bolted on in place of the back rest, and was open in the front and on top. She rode mile after mile back there, and in Arizona I layed the bike down when I missed a curve, and she rode it all the way with me without a scratch!
As far as handling, she weighed 29 lbs., and I could feel her move around, but never felt it was a handling problem. Generally a dog will lean the right direction naturally.
Our longest trip was camping through the rocky mountains from New Mexico to Wyoming. We traveled over 2400 miles, camped out 7 nights and crossed 13 passes above 10,000 ft. Never had to tell her to get on the bike, I just walked toward it and she would beat me there.
Just got a new dog last month, and will introduce her to the rear seat probably next month. I've sat her in my lap a couple of times and started the bike but haven't tried moving it yet. Just don't push the dog too fast. let her get used to it, and they will learn to love it as much as you. Good Luck.
