battery won't hold charge 3 Years, 2 Months ago
Please help newbie!! 2000 Road Star, only 3,700 miles on it.Battery only few monthes old-Started up fine, got on the highway, going 65-70mph,for about a mile.Got off on off ramp, downshifted, slowed down l guess to fast and bike stalled-Battery completly dead, lights wouldn't even come on.Got a jump start and made it back home about a mile.Shut bike off, then turned the key and dead again.Tryed charging battery but battery is dead.l read that a bad rectifier will burn a battery out,or if the rectifier connection is corroded, could that be it? Original battery lasted about 6 years!! Would the stator have anything to do with it? l'm hoping it's the rectifier because the stators are $$-l know basic mechanics and don't have all the voltmeters to check. Is there an easy way to fix this.Any help,PLEASE,thanks....

You need to have a voltmeter to check if the charging system is up to par.

The process for checking the charging system is detailed at the back of the Service Manual.

Well put a meter on your battery on the DC setting, see what it reads, should be 12 volts. Turn your lights on, see what it reads, should still be 11.5 to 12 volts, hit the starter and see what you have, it should hold real close to 12 volts the entire time.

I have had 2 bad batteries right out of the box from my local Yamaha dealer. Don't think that just because that battery is new that its any good.

First things first, check the battery...I have worked in auto parts and outdoor power equipment my whole life, and I can tell you brand new batteries can be bad...this would be the first thing I would check, as it is the only thing that has been changed. Dont jump right to rectifier or stator, start at the begining....

When the engine is off the voltmeter should read 12V but engine running, the voltmeter should read about 13.7 V.

You can buy a cheap volt/ohm meter from an auto parts store or Radio Shack you need one.

I will bet money its not the rectifier, you are getting bad batteries from where ever your buying them. Like I said, I went through two in a row, and not cheap ones.

I am still looking for a good battery, I might get the one Curt got off eBay.

Doc, if the voltmeter isn't at 13.7v with engine running, that means the battery is shot?
