Not to hijack this thread but has anyone done the Neck Punch,
and if so how hard is it to punch through the neck.

used to do the neck punch all the time when I was doing some "enforcement" work.

I solved filling my tank and without making a mess by going to a Looneys fuel cap. It comes with a smaller neck so you get less splash back (if any) and for some reason you can see the gas going in much easier.

I fill up when I get back from a ride. That way I can take off any time I want and never worry about fuel. I ignore the fuel gauge and just know to pull in and get some gss when my sore butt tells me to.

It take a while for the tank level to change once you add gas because the sender takes several readings and averages them over time. This is because the gas sloshes as you ride gives you a better reading.Maybe next time I ride I will time it a few times and see how long it takes for an estimate but that will be awhile in case someone wants a project as for holes in the neck never done it but a punch would work without leaving shavings if you were to drill them.I just tilt the bike ...Coug

I put a slot in the fuel filler tube on my R* after discussions with AussieJohn. Prior to this mod it used to take forever to fill the tank (with restricted tank vent), etc. The tank now fills quicker and I get more fuel capacity. The tube material is very soft and an old sharp wood chisel did mine nicely. Very simple and effective mod

I have punched three holes in the neck of my tank and I can fill it so that when I put the cap on the bottom of the cap is in the gas. My idiot light comes on at about 155-160 miles, and the main runs out at about 170-175 miles. The R* fuel gage can be highly erratic sometimes. Rather than use the fuel gage use distance. Reset the trip meter when you fill up and the main should run out around 170 or whatever is appropriate for the mileage that your bike gets.

If you want to punch the neck just follow the instructions in the tech section and use an awl to get started then enlarge it with a tapered punch.

I guess I'm not understanding... Did Yamaha change the tanks/necks after 2002? My '02 has no problem filling, and I've actually filled too fast and had an overflow. (oops...)

Gidday Frank..... Not sure about others. My problem was that the tank vent is too restrictive and when I previously tried to fill the tank the air gap created in top of the tank once fuel level raised above bottom of the filler tube would cause, as you say, an overflow.... several times before the tank was full. It would have taken me several minutes before the mod to fill the tank.

Now with the slot in the filler tank the air vents straight out as you fill the tank and the process is quicker and reduced risk of overflow; and of course you are getting to use up more of the tank's capacity.

I don't fill the tank completely if I'm going to be parking the bike up. I only fill the tank when I know I'll be riding on for some distance.
