How many miles did you run during that 3 year period...Coug

I use Mobil 1 15-50 Full Synthetic auto grade oil (non-energy conserving) in both the 'Liner and My Wife's Magna. Get a 5 qt. jug of it at Wal-mart for like 26.00 bucks. To boot , I use the super-tech filter (on both bikes as well) from W/M and they only cost 2.25 each. Zero issues. BB

I used Valvoline 20w50 4cycle oil for 25000 miles on a V-star and Road Star. Truthfully the only reason I switched to synthetic was extended oil change interval. I can now go on 6500 mile trip and not change oil until I get home. I may re-think this as the price of synthetic is getting rediculous. Saw Royal Purple at $16 a Quart the other day. Mobile 1 goes up every oil change. The $3.95 price per quart of valvoline is beginning to overcome the inconvenince of frequent oil changes.

I used to do exactly like BB... the same Mobil 1 and ST filter... but I'm switching this year to the Shell Rotella T synthetic 5w-40, after reading all about it here and at the Shell site. It meets JASO, even though they don't state it on the bottle, but the Shell answer man says it does on his site.

Called Mobil a little while back... and even though I'm sure it's fine in our bikes, been using it in 'em for 27 years, the guy on the other end of the line said they absolutely do not recommend use of it in bikes.

AND, the T comes in a 4 qt jug... no trying to pour the 5th qt out of the Mobil jug. T is $19 for 4, 1 is $26 for 5 qts.

So, Butter... answer your question?

This thread is useless unless folks specify the specs of the oil that they are using.

Oil that you used in you bike 10 years ago it not the same as today's oil.

An SJ oil in not the same as an SL or SM oil.

A Mobil 1 20W50 Red Cap is not the same as the 20W50 Gray Cap

etc.

So to make you info more useful ... please post

Brand
Type
Weight
API/JASCO spec

Thanks,

Doc

i agree with doc, companies make several different versions of things, so as much description as possible would be best, so far the only thing im feelin comfortable with is the red cap because i know exactly which one to look for, i wanna make this car oil for dummies
