Whine at high RPMs 3 Years, 1 Month ago
Was out for a ride today, still getting used to the bike, and loving every minute of it. Anyway, regaurdless of gear, as my rpms get in the higher ranges I hear a pronounced whine, very high pitched, if I shift, the rpms drop and the whine goes away until I get into high rpms again. I still have the AIS system on the bike, but i thought that it was more active on decel, while this noise is occuring while accelerating, any ideas where I should look, or is this a normal sound not worth my worry?

Thanks again, I love this forum, and my roadie!

Sounds like the AIS to me. Unplug the vacuum hose from it & plug the line with a small bolt, then take it for a ride & see if it quietens down.

Well it's at least worth trying, factor out some possibilities. Is the AIS always dumping air into the exhaust? I had thought that it was mostly on decel, but that must be wrong. I'll likely be capping the system soon anyway, but the wife is already giving me a hard time for spending too much on the bike, but there is sooo much i'd like to buy

There's some vacuum on it all the time I think, but plugging the line should effectively disable it so you can test it. Before I bought the flanges for mine I plugged the vac line & the 2 hoses going to the jugs & went ahead & removed the AIS system. Worked just fine till I got the flanges.

They are a very noisy bike, with the ais and the drive belt both combining at at the same frequency, freeks you out, i was thinking there was something wrong in the clutch area. but i mostly try to keep it out of my head. then you dont hear it anymore. The more mechanicaly minded you are the louder it seems.you will get used to it.

I have noticed this sound ever since I owned the bike. Its a normal sound. Removing the AIS had no effect for me. A friend of mine that owns a Roadie noticed the same thing on his. Kind of resembles the sound of a turbo charged engine. Nothing to worry about as far as I can tell. An MP3 player has helped me to get rid of the the noise
