fuel flowing..or not? 3 Years, 1 Month ago
This is strange. I start my bike up and the fuel pump runs for about 7 seconds and it never runs that long unless all the lines and carb are dry. I go for a 60 miles ride and the bike runs friggen awesome! I ran it real hard at times and slow and easy sometimes and it ran great! Tonight I'm messin with the bike and turn the key on and the fuel pump runs a long time again. I look at the fuel filter and it doesn't have much fuel in it at all. Usually it's 3/4 full. I pull it and blow thru it and it's clear. I install it and fire the bike up and rev it up and there is hardly any fuel at all flowing thru the filter. I ran it for about five min. and it never died but there was hardly a trikle of fuel flowing thru the filter. I couldn't find any leaks and didn't smell gas either. Weird.

Pull the gas line off the petcock and see if you have a good flow coming out of the tank.

OK. I pulled the line and I have good flow out of the valve. So, I'm gonna guess my fuel pump may be going out and not pulling the fuel thru? Just ran it again and not much fuel flowing thru the filter.

I wouldn't sweat it, your bike obviously ran 60 miles with no problems, fuel will evaporate differently at various temp and humidity so the pump will run longer or shorter periods of time depending on this.. so the ...worst case is the pump goes out and then you pitch it and go pumpless.... It probably has a flow rate, and you could verify that it is good, other than that, your guess is as good as mine........

1700cc---just and FYI---don't fix what aint broke-except if it involves more chrome-I had to read your first message twice--and you are not having a problem---the bike runs fine--at diferent rpm's---a see through fuel filter is not the judge of if your fuel pump is working---your bike is running fine--just buy more chrome and gas and ride longer!!! HAHAHAHAH Ronnie in MD VROOM VROOM ride hard but safe!!!! But the people here will always help you out---and questions just ask

Yes this is a tough one, even if you put another fuel pump on, you wouldn't know if it helped because your bike is running well. See when I fix my bike, I can always tell what a great job I did because it won't run...

Thank you guys for all the responses! I don't know..My bike has always ran, started exactly the same since I bought it new in 06. The fuel filter has always been 3/4 full when running. Something is going and I don't want to get stranded. I agree, if it ain't broke don't fix it, BUT, if it's acting weird then something must be going on. I just can't believe my bike was running so good with hardly any fuel flow! I'm anal about my bike like everyone else here so I'll probably end up buying a new fuel pump and see what happens. If that doesn't work then maybe my new solo seat rail and fender rack will make it better!!

If you get "stranded" just bypass the fuel pump to get you home then do the "losing the fuel pump" mod.

The fuel pump is a very low pressure pump ... less than 3 psi ... it's just meant to 'top up' the fuel bowl during periods of hard use. You won't normally see any effects of fuel starvation until the tank is low on fuel and/or hard engine use.

You problem may not be with the pump.... the fuel relay sometimes goes belly up. The Service Manual details how to chekc the fuel relay.

If your bike isn't hesitating or losing power at open throttle then the engine is getting enough fuel.

If you're still concerned that the pump is having problems, remove the fuel line at the carb, place it in a suitable container and run the pump to verify the flow. Be aware that the pump will not run continuously unless it is wired directly to the battery. You have to either turn the bike off and back on, or barely touch the starter switch to re-activate the pump. If you get a good steady flow while it's running, it's likely that you have no problem with your pump. My .02.
