Homemade driver backrest bracket 5 Years, 2 Months ago
I just finished my driver's backrest bracket today. Turned out great. The bolt is a bear to tighten with a one-piece bracket, but worth the trouble.

Check it out.

Also installed a tail/running/brake conversion kit to "lighten" up the rear end. Got it from Electrical Connection. Works good, took some time to install, but workw very well.

Intalled a new Memphis Shades 17x22 windshield and waiting on the rear sissy bar side brackets so I can make my own passenger sissy bar. Anyone have experience with Do-it-yourself powder coating? I ordered a kit from Eastwood that includes chrome coating along with colors (and black) coating.

This is fun!

Post edited by: sjh55, at: 2007/03/01 21:33

Good job. That should add to the comfort.

Thanks Musky! I'm happy with it. Feels great on my poor back, too. Just had my 5th surgery last year. Hopefully the last. I had a fusion and it feels great so I think they finally got it right this time.

Cheers!

Had my fusion back in 70 then 8 years ago blew out two disk just above it. It never get much better it will always be a weak spot. Maybe I should build me a rest too I am sure it would help. Yours looks really good like your changes. Let us know how powder coating goes. Might just have to try it.

Thanks Curt! I haven't had it out on a trip yet, but I bet this driver's backrest will help a great deal on long rides. (for us with back fun, a long ride can be 30 minutes sometimes)

The bracket was really easy to make. I used a cut-off saw to cut the 3/16"x2" flat steel to length and make the slot on the bolt end, a grinder (or the cut-off saw again) to clean up/shape edges, and a gasless MIG to attach tabs for the two lower pad bolts. Without a welder I would have just put a 1/2" strap across the upright for the two bottom bolts. The rest was just bending the upright at the right spots. You can hardly see it except for what's above the pillion seat which is only 2 3/4". A piece of black leather/vinyl would hide that easily, but it doesn't look bad at all. I'm quite ticled with myself. Can't wait to get started on the sissy bar and the engine guard and the luggage rack and the fender trim and...

Looks good!

I want to know how that powdercoat kit works out. I've been looking at those kits for some time now and trying to justify spending the cash.

Might attempt to do the frame as it's tough to keep regular paint from chipping.

Looks really good. I think of my back rest as a American Express card, don't leave home with out it. Just becareful not to get to comfy. With a back rest, highway pegs and as smooth as the Roadstar rides you might doze off....

I did the exact same rest for my bike, and for the same reason. I have a herniated L5, and get cortisone injections that usually last for a good long time. The backrest was supposed to be a prototype, as I wanted to eventually weld everything together, but it was so comfortable, that I just kept on riding ..
