Kong versus Snake 3 Years, 1 Month ago
Hey Guys,

I'm seriously considering doing the Kong Bar upgrade to my bike. However, I live in Kingsport, Tn and most of my rides are twisty mountain rides (The Snake (Route 421) is right in my back yard, afterall). So, I was wondering if any fellow hillbillies have done this (or any ape hanger mod), and how it's affected the Road Star's twisty road capabilities.

Thanks in Advance!

Dave

I ride the mountain twisties all the time. Bike handles great. As soon as you learn to countersteer you can go anywhere. Slow roll tight corners...whatever.i luv my apes. Was running them way before it was the "cool" thing to do. I have had them on my bikes for almost 20 years

Thanks, Warhorse. That's what I was hoping to hear. More input is welcome!

What bars are those you're running? They look taller than the Kongs (I think the Kongs are 16". I've read several comments on the apes about comfort and setting you a little further back in a neutral position, that sounds good. I do notice on longer rides (300+ miles) that my neck and shoulders start to tighten up.

And on top of that, they just look so flippin' cool!

ALSO! What's the best option for new cables. The kit Baron's wants to sell is $373!!! Is there a better option out there for S.S. cables and lines to do this mod? That just seems steep for a poor man.

I acquired a set of Kong bars from a fellow Clinic member along with the front break, clutch and one throttle clear covered stainless steel cables. Great deal and what is more, I'm loving them. As I have said before, the bike seems to handle more nimbly now. I used to put my hands up on the rear view mirrors sometimes just to ease my arms. That got me thinking about apes. At first I considered 12 inch because I already had 4 inch risers. But when the Kongs were made available I figure, what the hell, go all the way. Turns out to be the best modification I done so far.

mine are kong bars.nothing too crazy..16 tall and 1.25 dia. if you are gonna go that route i would totally suggest a driver backrest. makes an enormous difference in comfort. as afar as cables, i would also check out russel cables. no lie tho, cables cost a few bucks. clifford on here might be able to hook ya up with cables too. he is a pretty stand up guy.
