I think this is a mod that I will pass on, for now. It takes a little while to fill my tank, but I tend to stop every hundred miles or so, anyway. I don't mind a little extra time.
I never saw the need for it either. Most Roadies get around 180 miles on a tank. I am ready to stop for break anyway after 180 miles. Also, that sleeve is in there for a reason. It is meant to keep an air gap in the tank for expansion. You folks that have done the mod better not leave it topped off in a hot garage in the summer.

Did mine close to a year ago, and nothing but glad that I did. Simple mod to do and makes fueling easier, no more burping it to get a little more in there.
Like any mod, it's your choice if you want to do it or not, I did this one and I would recommend it.
That extra 1/4 or 1/2 gallon that you can get in there adds that piece of mind. If I get 45MPG on the Hi-way and I have an extra 15 or 20 miles I can go on the same tank, I would rather ride those miles than push the bike down the road. that sucker is HEAVY! and I'm getting old and fat

Did mine about eight months ago, never a problem. Fills up faster without having to burp the pump so much. Never had a problem with a hot garage, since I don't fill it up to the cap anyway. Maybe I'm one of the lucky ones.

I just tried the mod on my 08 R* with a nail punch with a very small tip. Figured that would do it fine. Wrong. I now have a nice series of little dents in my filler, but no holes. Guess I'll buy an awl someday and try again.
I want this mod for 1 reason - distance. I have been on rides in the west where it can be a long way between stations, and then you come to the town you are planning on, and - oh crap - the power to the little town is down and the pumps don't work. This happened just this August, and while I had enough gas to the next town without the mod, if that town too had no power, or the one station was closed for a wedding or whatever ... bottom line, being able to make it futher gives you more options. For the same reason, I like to fill up at about 80-90 miles, just to give me more options should s*** happen.

Mate, I did mine about 10 months ago with a sharp cold chisel and just cut a single slot about 1" long. That filler tube is as soft as butter......Just be careful not to generate a spark...it might be the last thing you do Seriously though, I had no trouble and that tank fills up nicely every time.

Democracy is two wolves and a small lamb voting on whats for dinner. Freedom under a constitutional republic is a well armed lamb.

Don't know if it's steel but it is soft. I pushed a small sharp scratch awl thru it with just a little tap from the palm of my hand. I also stuffed a damp rag in the top of the hole just in case.
