Could the noise be from the oil draining out of the top end and lifters?

It may be good to clean the carb and crank the engine without the carb on and spark plugs in just to get the oil circulating again. Cranking may restore lift to the lifters.

BTW - Check the oil level just in case. And remember it just has to show on the stick somewhere.

If the lifter/s have drained out, it may take a while (10 minutes of running) to get them fully pumped up again, also it could be a sticking valve. If valve is sticking open, piston may be hitting it. I would do the carby first, then pull the plugs and make sure you have plenty of compression.

The piston typically will not go up far enough in a given engine to hit an open valve because the valves are in the dome of the head which is above the top of the cylinder sleeve. The valves do not open far enough to go below the head into the cylinder. If it is hitting a valve, the valve stem keepers have either broken or were not installed correctly and have come out of the spring cap letting the valve drop down into the cylinder far enough for the piston to hammer it on the upstroke. I can't imagine this happening on a bike with 27 miles, but when he said he hears a knocking sound on the upstroke, it sure does sound like a dropped valve.

Sounds like a dropped valve. See if you can hear any rush of air from the exhaust or the air inlet for the carb/throttle body when you crank it. I wouldn't crank it any more than you have to, if it is a dropped valve the noise you are hearing is the valve hammering the top of your piston. 27 miles huh? What year model is it?.
BINGO Hate to agree with this but from what you have said ROAD HAWG sound right on the money

Thanks to all your suggestions...just came from the dealer and it's ugly from what they're saying. The total they give is $1600.00, $900.00 for a tank they say is rusty and scaley on the inside and the rest is for cleaning the fuel system and rebuilding carb, changing oil and filter. Sounds like a crock to me...your thoughts??????

You can buy a used tank with no rust for a whole lot less than that. And as far as cleaning things up and changing the oil. That's something you can do yourself in less than a day.

clean the carb your self, thats easy and good learning experience...

the tank many companies have a tank cleaner (like acid that will clean out the tank) it shouldn't have too much rust in it that has weakened the metal... just pull it off take out the petcock and plug hole and add the cleaner... while that soaks clean your carb...

shouldn't cost more than about 60 bucks worth of stuff. and time.

Get a second opinion, that's too much. Most of that you can do on your own. Take off the gas tank and bring it into a good mechanic if it is rusty inside. I think it can be cleaned out or blasted out. Heck you could probably put a cup full of glass beeds in it and just put it on a paint shaker for 1/2 an hour, drain the beeds out, rinse it out with some old gas and put it back on. That's not $900 and it will be the ORIGINAL tank.

If the tank is still good and you want to keep it take it to a radiator shop and have them steam clean it.

Otherwise .. check out e-bay for a used tank.

How is a rusty tank causing knocking in the top end?
