Very good question, and is that 1600 total or in addition to the 900 for the tank, which is an absolute crock of sh#t!!!
Its absolutly nothing to pull a tank as far as labor goes and even if you did have that painted to match the rest of the bike if your spending over say four your paying too much I had my whole ride painted less the frame for five. And to rebuild a carb say about 50 bucks tops in parts and maybe an hour and half in time. Buy yourself a good shop manual and diy it man just my two cents worth. You can find alot of help here these guys know their stuff trust me!!! And im still with Road on this one how would that cause a knock in the top end???

I am still confused as to why the dealer would not cover it (the top end noise) with only 27 miles. I realize the rusty tank thing and carb is from sitting to long and I know they will not cover that. It sure seems like a mechanicle engin problem should be covered under warrenty. Just my .02 cents opinion

First, smack your neighbor. (not for selling you a broken bike, but for only riding a great bike like a road star for 27 miles)
Second, buy a repair manual. (their is nothing more satisfying than knowing what the guy behind the counter is talking about)
Third, smack the guy that gave you that estimate. (1600 bucks, ouch)

Go buy a stethoscope from your local autoparts store. Find out if the noise is from the front cylinder or rear, and top of the cylinder or bottom. Its metal so the noise will travel far in the engine and the differance will be slight.

If there was no noise when the bike was parked, and it hasn't been touched since, I could imagine a lifter has collapsed (lost its oil). If the noise if from both cylinders at the top, its probably collapsed lifters.

Smell the gas. (not too much, its addictive). If it smells like varnish, its bad. If it smells like fuel oil, its diesel. If it smells like your lawn mower, your good.

Take a plug out and reattach it to the plug wire. If you smell gas in the cylinder, let it air out for a little while. (this also means that the carb is supplying some fuel). Place a rag over the hole just in case. Crank it and see if its firing (don't touch it while cranking, just rest the plug on something metal). One or two revolutions should tell you.

Check your fuses and cycle the kill switch and kick stand switch several times.

Clean the carb. Shut off the fuel valve on the tank and take a small sample of gas before the fuel pump. (don't use a styrofoam cup). (Cover anything that gas can fall on) If its orange, you have rust. If its clear(ish), your dealer guy is using an ouija board.

If the body of the tank looks good (no rust bubbles....), chances are you can Kreem it , and if you are real careful , it won't damage the paint , and it'll serve its purpose for a lifetime.

Then clean the Carb (Read that someplace already.... ) , replace the main fuel filter , check the little one inside the fuel line that is right at the carb as well , change the oil/filter , and let's see where you stand.

Best case , you spend about 100.00 on parts , and you're in great shape , worse case , you move onto plan B (whatever that may be).

We're here to help , let us know. BB

dang, these bikes don't like to sit. They want to be ridden. I don't understand how a rusty tank explains the knock. Of course there's no oil in that engine its all in the pan. I would try to salvage the tank if you can (if they aren't BS'ing you in the 1st place) When did your friend buy this bike? You sure it was only 3 months it was sitting? A R* only comes with a one year warranty; regardless of mileage; whether it be 100,000 or 27. Did your friend purchase an extended warranty by chance?

Find another dealer! It's not covered because they were trying to screw you. If they knew the vin # of the bike they knew it had an extended warranty on it. Now you have busted them and they won't admit to the screw deal.
