Possible wheel swap solution? 3 Years, 2 Months ago
|
|
|
Hey guys, I am writing about a wheel swap. I have recently swaped my factory spoke wheels to a set of mag wheels off a 06'. The only mod I made was to unbolt my pulley off my 03 wheel and bolt it onto the wheels of the 06' mag. The wheel bolted to the bike with no problems and while up on a stand it turned free and seemed to work great. I have put a few miles on the bike(about 10 miles) due to a snow storm we got while I was doing the swap. I will say that the bike rides great with no vibrations and makes no bad noises. I t rides like its always riden. Just curious if you guys know of any problems that may come up due to doing the swap this way. Thanks.

Sounds like you gave the setup a good shakedown run and didn't find anything to be a problem.
Personally, with any mod, I keep an eye on things just to be sure something doesn't bite me down the road.

Hey just thought Id let you guys know I finally got some nice weather and was able to put on a couple hundred miles today. The wheels worked great!! No problems of any kind I think this is going to be a good solution to the confusing wheel swap. Almost a direct bolt on!!!

Fire,
Question for you. I have an '01 with spoke wheels. A friend of mine tells me the factory mags are a very heavy wheel. You've hefted both, what would say in response to that?

I've hefted a few sets of both, and I don't see that much difference. The cast wheels are aluminum vs the steel rims/spokes.

I agree that there is not alot of difference. If I was building a bike for the strip it would be something to consider but for a street bike I would not worry about it. Plus they look great. I am going to have both sets of wheel off today again so Ill try to guess the weight difference and let you know.

Thanks, inquiring minds want to know... and racing or no, unsprung weight has a lot to do with ride, handling and acceleration. I don't want to undo any gain from my motor mods by adding unnecessary wheel weight. I'd make the switch for lighter, but not for heavier.

Hey had both wheels off the bike today at the same time. I didnt actually weight them but picking them up at the same time I will say the mag is heavier. However the difference is not much. I would say guessing maybe 5 lbs more. Ten lbs for both wheels should not take away from any motor mods at least none that yoiu would notice.

Well, I wouldn't say I would notice, or I wouldn't notice, but physics says heavier means slower, regardless of feel, and I'm not willing to work against all that I've already done to enhance performance. No offense meant, just statin' my piece. If I ever change wheels, it will only be for lighter.

Quick question. I have a set of cast wheels ready to go on. I bought only the cast rear wheel. Is my cush drive, axel all that interchangeable ? I know about a possible spacer change but would hate to have to buy a cush drive and such.
