Left on Red?? 3 Years ago
I heard the law now reads that a Motorcycle can turn left on red after 3 minuts. Anyone confirm or deny this?

I've heard something like that. I never watched the clock. If I sit through a couple lights I look to make sure the coast is clear and go.

I know you can turn left on red if it's from a one way street onto another one way street. In most states. Not heard of the 3 minute thing though.

MINNESOTA RED LIGHT LAW

Sec. 42. Minnesota Statutes 2000, section 169.06, is amended by adding a subdivision to read: Subd. 9. [AFFIRMATIVE DEFENSE RELATING TO UNCHANGING TRAFFIC CONTROL SIGNAL.]

(a) A person operating a motorcycle who violates subdivision 4 by entering or crossing an intersection controlled by a traffic-control signal against a red light has an affirmative defense to that charge if the person establishes all of the following conditions:

(1) the motorcycle has been brought to a complete stop;

(2) the traffic-control signal continues to show a red light for an unreasonable time;

(3) the traffic-control signal is apparently malfunctioning or, if programmed or engineered to change to a green light only after detecting the approach of a motor vehicle, the signal has apparently failed to detect the arrival of the motorcycle; and

(4) no motor vehicle or person is approaching on the street or highway to be crossed or entered or is so far away from the intersection that it does not constitute an immediate hazard.

(b) The affirmative defense in this subdivision applies only to a violation for entering or crossing an intersection controlled by a traffic-control signal against a red light and does not provide a defense to any other civil or criminal action.

In Wisconsin, it's similar to Minnesota, but it's 45 seconds of unchanged light. That was passed Jan 1st 2008. Again, the coast must be clear, and it has to be obvious that the light is not changing because it did not detect the motorcycle. You can turn left or go straight through.

Re:Left on Red?? 3 Years ago
I'm sure this law varies from state to state, Alabama also has a clause saying somthing to the effect of unreasonable time or several rotations of light changing for other directions and not yours. It is a problem when you are the only vehicle(motorcycle) on one of the magnetic sensor lights,,,,,I just recently had this problem and I kinda lost my cool with the LEO, I knew he had a camera running in his car and his microphone could catch our conversation so I told him in a tastefull manner that if he had a problem with me running the red light then I would see him in court, he wrote me a warning and I ripped it up in front of him.......The situation was stupid, I just got through detailing my bike, I wanted to take it for a spin, OK, it's 10pm during the week, nobody is out and downtown is like a ghost town. Of all redlights I stop at the one right in front of the police station and I have my left signal on...I'm going to make a ride by the river boatlanding downtown and back up to my house. I wait....wait...wait...ok, nobody has passed by, nothing comming, police station is dark except for the dispatch office, several LEO cars always parked outside, but one had an officer who was sitting there watching me the whole time, he waits till I get two blocks away then come out to get me....I asked him did he see how long I sat there, and his reply was next time turn right at the red,,MORON!.....I also had my blue leds on! He never said a word about them!!!

I used to have problems with this at one light in particular. I finally picked up a half dozen rare earth magnets and attached them to the bottom of the frame. Now the magnetic sensors embedded in the asphalt are able to "see" the bike and the light will change.

Good to know Musky! Being from MN and getting stuck at the same red (169 and Old Shakopee) almost every day, that's good news for me! I thought I was breaking the law every day. Kind of takes some of the thrill out of it, though.
