1st to 2nd getting stuck 3 Years ago
Hey guys - I just got back from a short ride, and noticed that it's all of a sudden really hard to get it into 2nd gear from 1st (no problem from 2nd to 3rd, 3rd to 4th, and so on). It goes into neutral instead of 2nd. I have to slam my heel on the heel shifter to get to 2nd. I think it started happening after I did my ritual 'bring it to the rev limit' after the first few minutes of the ride.

Could it be a burned out clutch or something? Help!

Thanks,
:-DD.

Check the shift linkage to make sure nothing came loose. And maybe try adjusting it. Check the clutch adjustment too.

I've noticed there are times when mine feels harder to shift than others, but not any one specific gear. I figured my linkage needed a lil lube. The more I use it, the better it gets. Do you pressure wash your bike?

No pressure wash... where exactly did you apply the lube? (ok that sounds wrong)

..just checked the linkage and clutch adjustment, everything's like it should be. Could I have maybe burned out the clutch a little with an improper shift I did when I did my 'hit the rev limiter' thing?

I guess that depends on the nature of that "improper shift". lol. I don't know if you coulda messed anything up there, I'm sure someone around here can shed more light on that. I spray a lil white lithium grease in the rubber boots at each end of the shift rod. I'll also take the shift lever off so I can make sure the shaft isn't corroded and is greased good. I'll just spray a good penetrating lube on it. I've seen bikes with shifting problems when the linkage gets dry and nasty from getting moisture in there and causing it to corrode some.

Mine started doing that a while back but adjusting the clutch cable fixed it right up.

.... then I would have gone through a lot of clutches.

Look for the simple things first .... usually it's the cable that needs to be adjusted.

When warm, you should have about a nickel's width of free space between the clutch lever and the mount.

I had some trouble shifting and recently adjusted the clutch cable at the handlebar (as Doc suggested above). It works great now and shifting smoother than ever.

OK it's still sticking - going from 1st to 2nd... it just doesn't shift like it used to. It gets stuck in neutral, and I have to *slam* it into 2nd with my heel. I tried adjusting my clutch and it didn't solve anything. It seems to get worse as it gets warmer. I'm thinking it might be a tranny problem. ANY suggestions?!?!
