First Bike question 3 Years ago
Hi Guys/gals...Razorstar here. My soon to be 21 yr old son is seriously trying to find a first bike. He has been looking at VStar 650 as well as the Honda 750....Partial to the Vstar here, as I ride a Roadstar. He needs a dependable easily managed bike to ride back and forth to college. $3000 to $4000 range. Anyone here know of inherent problems to look out for?? Suggestions?? I appreciate your feedback and respect the knowledge here! Thanks, John

Re:First Bike question 3 Years ago
how big is your son? I know it is his first bike but i think back to when I bought my 750 Honda it was not 3 months before I went out and got a 1100. Vstar I loved it and it was not much bigger then the 750 but more motor. If I was leaning to a smaller bike I would go for the 650 VStar but then again I love Yamaha's. right now it seem to be a lot of bikes for sell out there with low milage so don't get in a hurry a great deal is just around the corner!

Maybe find him a bike that has alot of aftermarket parts for it,then he can customize it to his liking and then he will be more apt to ride!!!!

Thanks for the input guys. My son is 5'10, approx 170 lbs. Concern being in town handling/parking on college campus. This bike is not intended to be a touring bike...From apartment to campus in town thru school year and maybe some day trips etc. 120 miles commute to and from school mostly twisties....I have ridden my bike down to Conway from Mountain Home Arkansas more than once, is a great ride (had to throw that in).

I agree with heatonmt the 1100 is not a big bike plus it has disc brakes not old school drum type and a lot more power

Re:First Bike question 3 Years ago
I bought a 2002 650 with 2000 miles on it for $3000 when gas got to $3 and rode it for 2 months and realized it was WAY too small for me. Sold it for $3000 and bought my 05 R* cash. If he is 5'-10" and 170lbs 650 will be too small for him too I am 5'-8" 165 lbs. I think the 1100 would be a better bike for him in the long run. At least he is more likely to keep it longer than 2 months.

Also had a 650 V-Star and loved it. However being 6'1" and 300 didn't make for a good ride or a pretty sight. I agree, an 1100 would suffice. Ride safe.
