Starter spin 3 Years ago  
O6 roadstar 1700 silverado....my starter spins or whirls when shutting down sometimes worse then other other times.Was told by a yamaha tech it was normal.... really don't think so.I had bought the bike last year straight from the crate.And has been doing this from day 1...what gives anyone else heard or is having the same issue??

It is normal. They all do it from day 1.

EDIT: I made my own videos using my bike. This is a new 2008 model. If this is the sound you are talking about, it is normal.

Every R* I have seen had a starter kick back when shutting down. I will see if I can find a video. I'll be back.

It's common. Mine does it when ever it feels like it. Our starters doesn't disengage like a Bendix starter does so if you shut the motor down with the piston towards the top of it's stroke the motor can go backwards for a second and take the starter with it. Doesn't hurt anything.

Video of starter kick back at shutdown. this one is mild, some actually make a whir noise. I posted 2 videos I made just for you in the second post of this thread.

I never really noticed it until I put a Warrior starter in mine. Compared to stock the Warrior ones are whiny starters anyway, but the spin on shutdown is hilarious...
