need help with oil level 3 Years ago

So, It seems my oil level is about 5/16" above the max full level on the dip stick. I've checked it wuite a few times and it's been consistent at that level since haveing the 600 mile service done. Seems to me that it looks like it has about 5 quarts in it right now. Does this seem accurate? Take a quart out and ride it?

Ignore the dipstick. It's been proven to be inaccurate. The bikes need 4 QTS only, no more, no less.
If it's really bothering you then drain both plugs into a clean container and measure it. Should be just under 4 qts not counting the little bit in the filter.

On a 1700 Roadie the oil level after a change & filter should be the first hash mark on the stick.
Any questions send it to Doomed

If you don't change your own oil you need to make sure and ask with what type and how much they used!! I use 4 qts and it's middle ways on the hash marks. Justmy02cents

Never add or drain oil based on the dipstick. It's inaccurate. But the dipstick is what the dealers use to top of the oil during a change. The problem is that 3 people could check it and get 3 different readings so you never know what you have in there. If it were me I would drain it all out and put just 4 qts back in and ignore the stick. That's all you need. If your not leaking or burning it you'll be good to go until the next change.

ONE person could check it three times and get THREE DIFFERNT READINGS and not know what I've got in there!
I agree wholeheartedly with Musky on this, the dipstick is a waste of time, ignore it if you araen't burning oil or leaking it between changes. I just add 4 liters after draining both oil tank and crankcase/replacing filter.
I think Yami put in a dipstick only to avoid calls from owners asking "why there's no dipstick?" It's also under the seat, out of the way!

I think most of my friends would say the "dipstick" in on top of the seat.... In my case at least...

That video on checking oil seems to work pretty well for me. I agree that it is a bass ackwards setup though. I took out a quart and a half and that brought it down to just registering on the dip stick. I will bring it up to the half way mark tomorrow. I know eventually my distrust will get the better of me. I still can not be sure they used my oil that I brought for the dealer to put in there. I will change it at 1000 miles and put in 4 quarts of mobile one vtwin. No more, no less... Thanks for the quick replys, you guys are very helpful. On a side note, I made a neat little oil cooler for the filter that has 4 very strong magnets in it. I'll post some pics asap.

My wife would say the same thing. I'm the dipstick that sits ontop of the seat, and I'm usually
IN THE WAY. Good one fireman!

looking forward to your oil cooler/magnet pics, jbiv
I use GM heater-motor magnets (the semicircle shaped ones) clamped onto my oil filter, but no oil cooler yet.
