And of course these are now considered obsolete
Higher ones,SJ,SM,SL say they will cover the earlier ones

I assume.

In our case (wet clutch) the formulation may be a problem so no, they should not be considered a 'replacement' for the older spec oils.

We've had a lot of discussion (speculation) on whether the newer auto oils can be used in our engines. I'll leave you to search for those threads.

In the end it's word of mouth ... "what's works for you". Just be careful when someone says they have been using a oil brand for years without problems. You need to find out exactly 'what oil'. I've been using Mobil 1 for years without a problem .... but then again I have not bought oil for my bike since '02 .... it's the old Red Cap and I don't know how different it's from the new (SL) Mobil 1.

I assume you are using the Grey Cap. For how many miles have you been using it?

I'll jump in here, since I'm using that same oil since November. I chose it as a "winter oil" since I thought it would flow at lower temps well; I worry about that sort of thing here in PA.

Anyway, probably about 2000 miles on this oil and I see no problems with it. It still looks like new oil on the stick, and that's after several hot days here lately where I got stuck in some traffic and I know the motor was cooking itself. So, I figure it's up to the task. No clutch slipping at all, and the engagement action is good.

I have some Mobil 1 motorcycle 20w50 that I'm going to put in for summer, when and if summer ever gets here in full force
