what grade fuel to use ! 2 Years, 12 Months ago
Im new to your site so I hope you wll bare with me . just traded my 06 v star for a left over 07 road star , got a great deal and really like the bike . I put around 800 miles on it stock , I put a set of V&H short shots and a K&N intake on , also got a barons jet kit and took it in for its first ( and hopefully last )check up and to get it jetted . It seams to run fine on regular but wondered what you all recomened , reg. or high test or does it make much difference !
Thanks

Reg. Less carbon build up. You need high comp pistons to make use of Premium. Use the search function in the top right to read about it. Pages of reading.

Thanks for the info. only got out yesterday and put about 30 miles on , been raining hard but cant wait to get on the highway and try the WOT test to see if they got it right on the jetting . Would a dyno be the best or most acurite way to check it ?

Dyno is a great way to check it. It just can be expensive.

Per the owners manual, I've run regular since it was new. Put in one tank of high test but it didn't seem to make a difference except in my wallet.

The engine is made for regular and unless it is modified with high compression pistons it does not need premimum gas! Here in central Florida premium gas costs between 20 and 30 cents more per gallon than regular. That is a dollar or more per tankfull un-necessary expense!

I tryed 2 tanks of premium and got 20 miles less per tank...she's made to run on reg..unless you have high comp pistons and advance the timing

Re:what grade fuel to use ! 2 Years, 12 Months ago
Some people here have been saying they are getting better results with mid-grade, whether the reason be the 10% ethanol content or whatever. One thing I've noticed, though, is a lot of people refer to their regular gas as 87 octane. Here in wonderful New Mexico, the octane on the regular gas is 86, the mid-grade is 88, and the premium is 91.

All I've ever run is regular, but this last tank I filled up with mid-grade just to see if there's a difference. I always fill up at Chevron (when available, that is).

Opinions, please...is the 86 a little too low--would it be better to stick with the 88? It may be just my imagination, but it SEEMS to be running a little stronger in the few short rides I've done since filling up with 88, and I know it sounds crazy, but I swear the tone of the exhaust is a little deeper and it seems to idle a little better. Probably the same effect as when a freshly washed and waxed bike seems to run a lot better.

Going to go for a several hundred mile ride right now to see, but I would love to get some feedback from my esteemed peers while I'm out...

TIA (thanks in advance)--

RK
