Jetting 3 Years, 11 Months ago
Rookie question, With just a K&N air-filter, V&H longshots, nemisis coils and a ported manifold could there be any reason the previous owner would jet my "new to me" '99 at 162.5 Baron/washer/clip 3rd groove/spacer/2 washers?

He was meticulous with documenting all he did on the bike, every oil change, every modification, every service. But I would have to say at 162.5 I am running waaaaay rich. I am getting about 35MPG and would think that jetting a bit leaner would improve that.

What K&N filter? A 162.5 is pretty small for a main jet.

I will check once I get to the house on the model. It appears that it does not have a "specific" BAK on it, just a show chrome cover. Would I be right in thinking that a 162.5 main probably be too rich at this point with the ~35mpg? I will check a couple of places in town for a jetting kit tomorrow, just in case. Good to have on hand, either way.

Also, would you recommend me simply taking to to a zero sum game and following the "basic jetting" route or try adjusting from where it is at now?

So it's an open K&N filter. Not just the filter that fits in the stock air box? Because that makes a big difference. A few things go into how rich or lean you're running. If you are up around 5 or 6 thousand feet a 162.5 might be good. Down around sea level it's pretty lean. There is overlap in the different carb circuits but unless you ride wide open all the time you aren't on the main circuit that much. I would look at the PMS setting, float level, And see if the PO changed the pilot jet. It should be a 35. The 3rd groove (from blunt end) with 2 washers under the spacer is a way to go half way between the 3rd and 4th groove. A washer is equivalent to a 1/2 groove. If you are going to get a jet kit I would recommend the Barons kit. It has everything you need. If you go with a Dynojet jet kit pick up a 180 Dyno main too. That jet doesn't come in the kit and it's the one that works for a lot of people. It sure won't hurt to back to step one and go through the process. How are you estimating your mileage?

I am at 4500 ft in Reno.

To estimate the milage, I fill it up reset the trip odometer and then ride. Once I get to the point of filling back up (light comes on), I fill it up and calculate then. Been doing that over 15-20 tanks or so. The PO did run premium through it, so I started out with the first 5 tanks adding seafoam and running 87 through it. I now run 87 exclusively.

It is not an open filter. It goes in the box.

That is probably your problem then. Even with the K&N the stock air box is still a real air choker. And porting the manifold makes you a little richer too. If you are going to keep the stock air box and you have the stock needle and main I would put them back in. Or since you already have the K&N filter you could do the Poormans BAK and then do the jetting process. Poormans link

You seem to really know your stuff when it comes to jetting. I am in SW Minnesota so I feel like we are neighbors. I am planning a trip to Portland Oregon in a couple of weeks and want to do some final tuneup on my 06 Road* I just returned from a quick trip to Mankato, on the way up I ran regular 86 octane gas and got 38 mpg. On the way back I filled with super premium 92 octane and got 32 mpg, go figure. I have been battling poor mileage since I got my bike a year ago. I have Hard Krome pipes and stock air filter. My local shop has rejetted the bike with Hard Krome's recomended dynajet kit. I have a couple of questions, I will be riding anywhere from sea level to 10,000 ft and in the past I have had the bike give me trouble starting while the engine id hot at 5000+ ft, It finally started but it was on the verge of flooding. I am also going to put in a new air filter and new plugs before I go. Can you give me any recommendations to set me up for a good trip?
Thanks
Speedball

Speedball, hit the link that BigBoy posted for the BigBoy BAK and read up on how to do it.

You say that the bike has been jetted and only aftermarket pipes. You don't need to jet in that situation because it makes you run rich.

You need to get more air in or return your bike to stock jetting.

Alter your stock air box or spend $$$ and get an aftermarket BAK.
