Don't get discouraged if you have to go back into the carb more than once. That's pretty much the norm.

Haven't modified the air intake yet but I took it our for a hard ride this afternoon. I have never hit my rev limiter so I thought I would put the nuts to it. I was looking at what most guys have for speed in 3rd gear. I started to sputter at 87 mph in 3rd. I don't know if the previous owner changed the rear pully but that seemed a bit fast for 3rd. I notced my engine was rough at the top end. I will see what happens after the poor mans BAK and rejetting.

Only the 99s had a hole in the starter jet.

I modified my air intake with a hole saw and a bit of time, it looks like a honey comb now. I also installed a K&N air filter. Took it out yesterday before I did any jet work and rode for an hour at 70 mph Mileage went up to 40 from 32. Last evening we rejetted from a dynajet 170 to a dynajet 165 and the PMS from 3 turns to 2 1/2. Did the WOT test iand it felt great. 3rd gear wide open for a fer seconds and then backed off 1/8 tun of the throttle and it continued a smooth acceleration, if I remember correctly thet is the way it is supposed to run. Went for the exact same ride today as yesterday, albeit in the rain, and got exactly the same mileage. When I replaced the plugs with NGK Iridiums the old plugs were a bit black and the intake had a litle black in the throat between the carb and the engine. Any ideas or is this the best I can expect?

Did you have the clip in the 5th groove for the WOT?

No I had it in the 3rd, are you talking 5th from the blunt end? Wouldn't that allow more fuel throught the intake?

Read the instructions for the WOT in the tech articles. Your test is invalid.

Aside from the WOT shouldn't a smaller jet make for a leaner mix? Does a leaner mix equate to better fuel economy or is it a much more complicated issue?

How fine of a line from a lean mix to a dangerously lean mix that can damage the engine?
BTW I had a Dynajet kit so should I place the clip in the 4th ring?
