Re:Opportunity to try a HD 2 Years, 11 Months ago
The worst thing about Harleys is some(not all ) of the people who own them. Ive been on rides with all kinds of brands in the pack and the HD riders didnt have anything to do with the rest of us , hardly said two words the whole day until we stopped somewhere where other HD riders were and then they would all congregate in their own little circle . Ive owned a couple of HDs and they are just as good as any other bike certainly not any better. As for the arguement about listening to CDs, Id save that for riding in the car , the sound of the wind is much better. If you are buying a bike to sell then the Harley might be a better choice but they are not selling as high as they used to , you are going to lose money either way. Im not trying to get an arguement started but this is a Roadstar site .

Where in Wis are you going? I'm in Green Bay, Silver Fox & Greyphart are in or near Appleton. Maybe we can hook up with ya and get a Road* or two in the pack! PM me if you are going to be in this area.

Darn,

See the PM I sent to you. BTW, nice looking bike! Looks like we both have good taste!

Yep, what mods have you done to yours? I added the ultimate seats, front fender rail, chrome fender tips front and back, and a luggage rack and tall sissy bar.

We've pretty much done the same mods, ultimate seats, chrome fender tips front and back, and a luggage rack and tall sissy bar. I went with the solid fender tip on the front instead of the rail, although I like the look of both. I added the highly overpriced Star Front Fender Ornament....liked the look and couldn't pass it up. I have a leather windshield bag. Engine and exhaust are still stock, but plan to do a stage one sometime this summer. Just hate messing with anything at this point as the bike runs so darn good. Figure I'll consider making changes if and when I start to have problems that force me to make modifications.

So in the end my point is both makes are different and there are some good points to each, and yes there are some bad points to the R* despite every one here thinking the R* is the greatest.
Neither is perfect but they both will bring a smile to your face if you truly are a biker at heart!!
Stop trying to convince yourself that you made the best choice by buying a R* and any other bike out there can't compare. Just enjoy what your riding and be proud of it and keep the wind in your face! I will ride with you even if your on a scooter as long as you can do the speed limit!!!

Good points. I really am excited about the opportunity to give a HD a test ride. I certainly have no intention of trading in the R*. I'm perfectly happy with my choice. Having only owned a cruiser style bike for a couple years, I still find myself surprised by the overwhelming success of HD in attracting people to buy their product. We get around a lot (both on and off the bike) and from what I can see, HD is the top seller in the NW. This opportunity will give me a chance to see what this group of bikers is experiencing. In the end, I'll bet the wind across my face and bugs in my teeth will feel and taste the same regardless of what I'm riding....and Danny I think that's your point.

You'll be happy with the Road King. Or an Ultra wouldn't be a bad choice either. Get something comfortable. Just don't get too comfortable. Harley's are great motorcycles though. I've ridden a Deuce, two Road Kings and 3 V-rod's. Loved em all. I don't care what I ride as long as it has two wheels. Even my Gary Fisher

Loko... so what are you saying; the Harley's a bigger motorcycle or the Roadie... especially for two up? Bigger how... between the two persons - more room?

very good query...

Although the R* is a softail and should be compared to the Heritage or Fat Boy

OK the R* is a longer bike..2499mm than the Road King...2399mm and a longer wheelbase 1689mm to 1612mm

does that make it BIGGER...

The HD Road King weighs 776.9lb 352.4 kg and the R* S model 774 lb 351.08 KG heavier by a few pounds so a "bigger" bike

The gas tank on the Road King is bigger..capacity 6 gal versus 4.74 gal for the R*

The "feel" of the R* may be a bigger feel cause the wider handle bars... wider dimensionlly tank not bigger capacity wise..and more forward floorboards...because of the stretched wheelbase ..giving taller riders more room

That is what I noticed with the Ultra which would have the same rider cockpit feel as the Road King

But being a smaller.. oops shorter guy 5 9..

the HD handles easily in parking lots and tight turns and is quite comfortable for me

We stopped in at the local HD shop yesterday to pick up a couple of small items. This dealer also sells Yamaha bikes. After we were done shopping we decided to take a stroll through the HD section to check out the Road King. Just sitting on the bike it felt different than the R*, but then again I didn't expect it to feel the same. Overall I think the Road King will work and that's probably the model we'll rent on our trip. Interestingly, I sat on a couple Yamaha bikes too....1100 V-Star, Roadliner and Stratoliner. The Roadliner and Stratoliner all seemed like a good fit, but the 1100 still seemed to "bunch me up", which is the main reason I looked at the R* in the first place.

Me and my wife test rode a heritage classic and a road king. the heritage was way smaller feeling. on my r* we have probley 2 to 3 inches between us, on the classic she was right on me. the king was a nice bike, although it felt smaller too. dont know if it was the way the seats are made or what.also the king seemed to have a lot of vib. at idle. more than my * if thats possible.other than that the king was a strong runner.

I guess you didn't really understand my point. First off my wife and I ride and when I say ride I'm talking 700-800 miles in a day when were on a trip. So listening to music while riding that long of distance makes the ride enjoyable!!
The point I was making is people who own a R* only, think that when they get on a harley and they feel the vibration at idle!! in their mind that is a bad thing! My point was that even though you may seem to feel the vibration more at idle on a harley in reality it vibrates less then a R*!!!! The ROADSTAR vibrates so BADLY as soon as you bring the RPM'S up you can't play a CD and everything about the bike is RATTLING. Now can you understand why I would used the CD not being able to be played in the R* to get my point across???? Go ahead and ride what you want and convince yourself that your bike is superior to others and if you want to hear the wind in your ears rather then music feel free! You can save your music for the car. But I will continue to ride my motorcycles everyday of the week!!!
