There are 4 bulbs that light up the speedo. You can get replacement bulbs at Radio shack cheaper than the dealer. You could buy some and do like Doc said and paint them red. Radio Shack

Those are not LED's.

Who said they were? They can be replaced and this is an alternative.

Re:Speedo backlight? 2 Years, 11 Months ago
I had my speedo out the other night...funny how I had the same idea...and they are just little bulbs that stick out from the circuit board and point up towards the speedo dial. I got as far as getting the circuit board.speedo dial out from behind the bezel...then I chickened out when I got as far having to take the speedo dial off. Even though I KNOW it's electronic, I just had this nightmare vision of little spring and parts falling out as soon as I took the dial off, and I'd have NO idea where they went... Hey, it was late, I was tired...

For anyone who has done this, is taking the whole speedo dial off by undoing the screws that hold the dial to the circuit board the best way to do it? And are 3, 412 parts the size of gnats gonna shoot everywhere?

Yep...no problems. You have to CAREFULLY pry the pointers off first and then the 2 dial screws. No flinging parts!

My bad, I just assumed he was wanting LED's since that is what he purchased. One thing to consider is what impact would the heat from incandescent lights have within the closed assembly of the meter? LED's have no heat to speak of compared to incandescent bulbs. You would be surprised how hot those little incandescent weat bulbs get. They have been widely used in sub panels in aircraft for years and I can tell you those panels get hot. All newer aircraft have LED's installed in the sub panels now. They never get warm.

Thanks, Mr. C, that's all I needed to know...

Funny...been building computers as a hobby for over a decade, tossing the guts around like it's nothing...and I got skeered by a lil ol' speedometer...

The lamps in the speedo are a 14v mini-neon lamp. You only have to remove the back of speedo housing, the lamps are in a brown socket (mine are brown) they take a 1/4 twist to unlock the socket from the circuit board. Unwrap the old lamp from socket, keep an eye on how the wire wraps.

Radio shack carries 12v mini-neon with a 2 inch pigtail, about 1.70 for 2. Thread the pigtails thru the 2 holes in socket, make sure one pigtail in each hole or you'll short the lamp. Wrap and trim, insert in circuit bd, 1/4 twist to lock, close up speedo, done deal!!

NO NEED TO REMOVE SPEEDO FACE!!!
