Mountains 2 Years, 11 Months ago
When i go to tennessee to ride the dragon( in 3 days ) the map says that by ober gatlinburg/clingmans dome the elevation is 6643 feet, the higest point in tennessee. Is that bad on the bike? The transmission, clutch? When we went there years ago, some of the locals said it was very hard on car transmissions to climb to ober gatlinburg. What u guys think?

You won't have any problems...... Biggest problem going over 441 is the RV's. Slow going up or down the mountain.

Do yourself a favor and obey the speed limit signs posted on 129. THP ( Tennessee Highway Patrol ) and Blount County Sherriff Dept have been patroling 129 pretty heavy. And watch for lane crossers.....

Be sure to ride the Cherohala Skyway ( Robbinsville, NC to Tellico Plains, Tn ) and be sure to stop in the Tellicafe for lunch in Tellico Plains. GREAT food! Also check out Bald River Falls outside Tellico Plains. IMHO, the Skyway is a much better ride than the Dragon....

So many roads.....

Have fun!!!!

Boy are you right about the Cafe. I found out the guy that owns it was like a major cook at Disney World. He got tired of the rat race and moved to Tellico Plains. I too would rather ride the Skyway than the gap any day !!

Don't worry about it, I live in the valley (740 asl) and go up that way often..you will notice a loss in grunt, but not bad..enjoy, after you sweat your gonads off on the dragon, kick back and enjoy the skyway, and definately keep the speed, TN does not mess around when it comes to speeders..

More places to ride......

Head out to Fontana Dam.... a nice ride on 28. Hellbender is out that way too! Supposed to be worse than the Dragon ( more curvy ).

Little River Road from Townsend, Tn to Gatlinburg, Tn. Then over the mountain on 441 to Cherokee, NC

Foothills Parkway from 129 to 321 outside of Maryville, Tn. Very nice rolling hills, great views, but watch the speed!

OBSCURE FACTOID OF THE DAY

A Road Star guru once told me the rule of thumb is that you lose roughly 3% of your power, or "oomph", for every 1,000 feet you climb above sea level (ASL). Since I live at 7,000 ft, my bike has about 21% less power than you folks riding down on the coast...any coast.

Just once I'd like to get down low and see how this sucker is supposed to go. Not that I have any complaints about it here...just curious.

Thank u all for your input. I was really worried about the bike because me(6'2 287lbs) and her (160lbs) plus gear was alot of weight to be pullin up them mountains. Also i didnt have time to swap out the factory spring, so that worries me a little too. Again thank you all!!
