oil cooler questions 2 Years, 11 Months ago
I was wondering if any of you have installed an oil cooler? I live in NH and while I am concerned about engine heat in the summer time, I also am concerned about not warming up completely in the cooler weather...also wondering if anyone has a picture of it on the bike?

Kevin,

I'm just below you, in MA... if I may be so bold... don't do it. These don't run so hot up here that there would be any benefit to be gained, and certainly more chance for something to go seriously wrong. Run a synthetic oil, and it will run cooler... and plenty cool enough. JMO

It might be an advantage if you ride in parades alot, other than that, I don't see a need for it. frequently, I have reached down and touched the valve covers and heads bare handed just to see how hot they are..granted that may not be the best way, but I've never been burned...

For someone in southern California,Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, or southern Florida an oil cooler might be nice but in New Hampshire there is nothing to worry about!!!

They definitely don't hurt, and probably do help, but if we can ride a Roadie here with no problems then it's overkill where you are.
Sunday was 101 just outside my covered front door and the news says it's been 98-99 every day.
Possibly one of the biggest things is making sure you aren't jetted to lean. Last summer I was jetted lean and you could tell the bike was really too hot. I've since jetted correctly and it runs normal.

That was my school of thought as well, the whole reason I asked the question! Thanks to all for the input, all of you...I think I will pass on the oil cooler and buy more shiny things instead!

If you're concerned with oil temps you could try a Bucks cooler. It doesn't hang more stuff off the bike or make more places to leak It just clamps on the filter. And if you add up all the fins there's a lot of surface area to help dissipate heat even in slow traffic. An alternative anyway. Bucks
