Power Commander Help. 2 Years, 11 Months ago
I need some help from my star brothers,My 2008 Roadstar Fuel Injected is popping and flames coming out of the pipes since i installed some Khrome Werks slipons. sounds great.I know some members allready suggested that i disconnect the AIS.but i think that is only the wrong short term fix.The "Stealer" is suggesting a power commander. What do i do?Ionly have 800 miles on it.bought it in march 09,it was a leftover i dont want to do wrong by the bike.
Thanks Brothers

Installing aftermarket pipes & leaving the AIS intact WILL cause backfiring & flames to shoot out the exhaust. Mine sure did. If there's any doubt in your mind, try a quick experiment. Remove the 2 rubber hoses going to the little chrome pipes leading to each cylinder, & plug them with bolts on the side going to the cylinders. Find the small vacuum hose coming from the intake & plug it with a golf tee. This will disable the AIS without actually removing it. Ride the bike & see if the problem goes away. If it does you can get the removal kit & lose the whole system. I rode with the system plugged for some time before I actually removed it. Once it's removed it becomes a permanent fix. If you're worried about an emissions inspection problem, just ride with the system plugged & put it back together at inspection time.

It only takes a couple minute to plug the AIS. I did the Power Commander thing first then learned about the AIS. It still popped after the Power Commander too. You do not need one with slip ons either. You can fix this for free. There two rubber hoses next to the left floor board. Each one is clamped onto a chrome tube that feeds the cylinder exaust ports. Simply unclamp each one and plug it with an allen screw, ball bearing, wooden dowel, whatever you got and clamp the hoses back on the chrome tubes. Your done now go ride and try to get rid of the smile on your face. I did this 5000 miles ago and it hasn't popped since.

Sonny:

You're getting good advice regarding the AIS on our 2008s.

1. Remove the AIS setup. Backfiring will stop. It HAS to at least be disconnected. It'll run like a top. (Also, we don't have a vacuum tube, just the two hoses)
2. Don't listen to the dealer about the Power Commander. You don't need it. Save the money and buy some chrome...
3. Make sure you've connected your 02 sensors in the new pipes. Don't disconnect and run the bike without them.

You'll be back to riding in no time.

I have Road House slip ons and an AIS kit instaled on my 08 and still it pops and back fires. I have heard that I need to put a PC3 on but I have read that some are still haveing problems with that and to disconect the 02 sensors, yet some have tried that and that did not work, so what IS the answer?
I am ready to go back to stock pipes this is just not worth all the trouble and wait until the pipe manufactures solve the 02 problem, wish I had not bought a FI bike!

deadhead:

Just my .02. But, I don't believe a PCIII is required for either/both exhaust and intakes on 2008-2009. The FI models adjust for the mods like magic. Introducing the PCIII just brings issues with it that weren't there to begin with. Try it without it and you'll see what we're talking about...

Again, the formula is simple:

It only cost $30-$40 to have the bosses welded into the pipes, if they are not already there.

Mine runs strong with both the RoadHouse Dooleys and an open air intake. Good power, no popping, great throttle response.

Keep it simple and go riding.

AMEN to to that, keep it simple, AIS plug/removal, plug 02's and your set, I second the power cdr, doesn't do crap for you if it isn't dyno'd with the right map in addition to the AIS and 02 sensors. I could have saved a couple hundred bucks leaving the power commander on the shelf!

I was told the AIS kit would defeat the system, I know they removed something, I got a bag full parts and hoses back but she still pops and back fires.
