1600 vs 1700 Handling ? 2 Years, 11 Months ago
Just wondering if anyone has ridden a 1600 and 1700 back to back. My Dad has a 1600 that does not seem to handle nearly as well as my '05 1700. I am wondering if there is an issue with his bike, or if they changed something on the 1700 to make it handle better. Most noticably, the 1600 does not want to turn in when riding slow. Once you're really rolling it handles fine and corners well, but around town it seems to want to understeer.

His 1600 has spoked wheels, would that make a difference ? He's got brand new rubber front and back so it shouldn't be tires. I'm also wondering if his steering head bearings might be toast, or his forks might need a rebuild.

Any Ideas ?

According to a report I read, your cast wheels are 4.4 pounds lighter on the front, and 3.1 pounds lighter on the rear than the spoke wheels. This could explain some of it.

Also, are his spokes tight? Steering head is another suspect.

Good luck

The newer bike should handle better, also the engine is FI if I remember which is going to make the power transfer a little, whats a good way to say it, smoother? Which makes you think the bike is handling better.
Lots of improvements on the newer bikes, old 1600's are just what they are, big ol air guzzling twin. Great bikes in their own right. But you can't really compare an older 1600 to a new 1700 and wonder why you like the 1700 better...

I've ridden my '03 1600 and then swapped with my cousin who drives an '05 1700 - can't really feel a difference (other than mine's faster, of course!) LOL

Truly, though - neither of us could tell a real difference other than his stock seat versus my Mustang. And we were deep into the twisties that day.

check the steering head bearings. what your describing sounds just like my bud's 1600. had to have them replaced, but afterword , handled just as good as my '04 1700

I would think tire brand and air pressure would make a big difference too.
