Opportunity to try a HD 5 Months, 2 Weeks ago
My wife and I will be traveling to WI next week where we plan to link up with friends for a day for a ride. We'll rent a bike from a HD shop and get our first ride on a "hawg". I'll be interested to see how the HD performs and how it stacks up against the R*. It continues to amaze me how many people own a HD. Every place we go HD motorcycles out number other bikes 3:1 or more. They are great looking bikes, but with the premium price, I have to shake my head to see all the HDs on the road. I our area we rarely see another R*....not sure why. I'll be the first to admit it if the HD performance is there. Something tells me it has more to do with the idea of owning a HD than anything else. We'll see.... Any suggestions on what model to ride? I'm thinking a Road King.

Where in Wis are you going? I'm in Green Bay, Silver Fox & Greyphart are in or near Appleton. Maybe we can hook up with ya and get a Road* or two in the pack! PM me if you are going to be in this area.

Have several friends who have HD's. I would go with the Road King, Road Glide, or Street Glide, but that's just my .02.

Yakman
I just returned to North Carolina this past Monday from a 7 day ride up the California Coast.
We rented an Electra Glide...it was my first time on one.I got to say that I was impressed. It is shorter than the Roadie in which I felt That I was closer to the forks and it cornered real well. My complaints are that every time I was pushing the bike back,my calves hit the rear floor boards and a few times I had to abort passing a car at about 75mph (I am used to my Roadstar upper end power)did not care for the idle vibration either .
My girlfriend wanted to go visit the Harley dealer when we got back but I think the touring wrap around seat and trunk is what she liked. I said I could put the same seat for her on the Roadstar.
As far as it being a better bike....IMO no,an equal perhaps with different style and features but I would consider parking an Electra Glide in my garage along side my Roadie .

I owned a RoadKing and I tell you this , even though it really is a good bike , the very first thing you will notice is the size (believe me . . . size matters ) do you ride 2up a lot ?? if you do , you will see what I am talking about

My brother recently test rode a couple of HD's, Screamin Eagle Ultra (close to 40 grand) and a Road Glide. He has ridden my 99 R* and likes it a lot, said mine was a better ride in his own opinion. Anyway he ended up with a Victory Vision, say what you want about the looks, it is one nice ride! Gobs of power, handles unbelievable for a big bike, sorry got off the subject. I love my Roadie.

If you get the change to put a few hundred miles on it before you make up your mind. I hated my Ultra for about week. Its different and if you expect it to feel like your roadie.. it wont. After that..Love it.

straight from the heart here guys.......now im not your usual 'cruiser' kinda guy, so i say the following with no brand-loyalty.....no-preferances....no stigmas, just straight from the horses mouth.....
firstly some background......
im 35 yrs old and had over 30 bikes since i was a teen' ....ive ridden thousands [literally] and among those ive done big miles/long ownership ive had super-motos.....crossers.....race-reps.....road-legal-big quads.....even built and raced my own nitrous gsxr's and turbo-charged hayabusa.....ive had old-school [yam xs1100/gs 550/400-4 etc] ive had modern [k7 gixxer thou] basically, if its got 2 wheels ive owned/ridden it!!!
right, now to my point......
regarding big-customs, ive had a intruder1400 when i was a teen......a 1600 wildstar about 5-6 yrs ago....and recently got my 1700 roady.....not to mention the various chops/low-riders/customs ive ridden aswell....but heres the clinch, m8 of mine gave me his new harley fatboy for the afternoon.....[this was about the same time i owned the 1600 wildstar [you guys call it the roadstar i think] anyways.....the wildstar did EVERYTHING better than the harley!!!!! it would tickover lower [great sound] it would pull from lower revs [great sound] and it would pull harder!, the brakes were better, the fit-n-finish was better, the fastners used were of better quality....and the general feel of the bike was alround better in terms of build-quality......in short, the big-yams do everything a harley will do and more, wait for it......at half the price! no contest in my book
