Hello all, I've been gone for a good week riding around Michagan's UP. Absolutly beautiful trip. We were caught out in the rain a bit while up there and on the trip home saw a good 300 miles of rain. Now I'm about to grease and lube everything up real good to get rid of all those little squeaks and rattles after a long ride in the rain. I noticed upon returning that I'm 1000 miles over my regular oil change, but since I've switched to Mobile 1 synthetic, I was considering just putting a new oil filter on a keep riding till the next scheduled change. I was wondering how much oil I'm going to lose when I unscrew the filter without draining the crankcase. I've got one spare qt of oil on my shelf to top it off again afterwards. Will that be enough to do it?

I've wondered the same thing, I cant see you losing more than 1/4 of a quart myself. At the most, whatever the filter would hold. B.T.W. I was in the U.P. last week myself... in the semi. I definatly wanna go back on the bike! Did you have a "Pasty"?

No I didn't. I wish I would have. I guess now I've got another reason to go back. We rode up the west coast, camped in the Manistee National Forrest. Rode down 119 the "Tunnel of Trees", across the bridge, down 2 skirting the caost. Up to Pictured Rocks State Park, over to Taquemenon State Park and Paradise. Then up to Whitefish Point, over to the Soo Locks and back down to Indiana. It was a beautiful trip despite the rain.

You're right that you will not need to add much oil, those filters are small and won't hold much.

Just curious. If you're that close to an oil change, why not do it all at the same time? Or just wait until it is oil change time? I don't understand why you would just change the filter.

If it's mobile one with a mobile one extended filter I'd just go right on to 8K and not blink. Then change it all. 1000 over with Mobile one is nothing if the engine has been running properly and it's been in there way less than a year.

But if you insist, get an empty oil container, catch what comes out as you unscrew it, then drain what is left in the filter into same container, take note on how much you have there and add that much and a tad more to the fill tube of clean oil and you'll be good to go.
