Getting Ready to Port my Manifold 2 Years, 10 Months ago
So next weekend I'm planning on porting my manifold. I have my tools and a barons jet kit at hand as I understand she will run richer than she already is once i'm done.
My bike has run rich since I got her a year ago. I have a hypercharger fitted and V&H longshots. I tried dialing in the PMS to lean her out a little but she runs like crap when I do so always go back to running rich again. Plugs are always black but not covered in a thick layer of soot but she runs good.
I get 40+mpg on a run but she drops big time around town.
I have read up the tech notes about porting the manifold....just wanted to know from the guys that have already done this if there is anything else I should be aware of before I start?

Thanks in advance.

Ringo

When you're grinding the rubber inside the manifold and hit metal, don't freak out...like I did.

Be careful with the o-rings, set them someplace safe. You might even want to put the oversized ones in, since they are the primary seal between manifold & head.

Have a nice bright work light so you can see the surface inside the manifold clearly, and don't make it too too smooth...gotta keep it all mixed up & atomized.

It's easy, have fun with it...

Make sure you round the corners from the head runners to the carb runner. If you have a drill press it is much easier to do it that way with a sanding drum. If you have a VERY flat surface then I would surface the head flanges as well they are really rough. I have a 5/8 inch glass table I use to do it on. I you have granite counter tops you can use them just don't let the wife catch you. I had trouble with my bike being rich and SVS until I got rid of my hypercharger and got the BAK and did my SVS cure. Good luck and have fun.

After porting it's best if you rejet without making assumptions.

This article is a good place to start ..... Basic Jetting

OK! to all the jetting experts
I pulled the carb and ported the manifold and got that put back on then pulled off float cover to get at the main jet. Unscrewed the main jet and it has FTC 182.5m in it. I have the barons jet kit with 4 main jets (167.5, 170, 172.5 and 175) I was running a little rich before (mainly on the rear cylinder) I ported the manifold. Which jet out of the barons kit do you think I should go with first? and where should I go with the clip on the needle?
Many thanks!
PS I'm having so much fun

Well I went ahead a put in the 172.5 main and needle on the 4th clip. Fired her up and she coughed and splutted and then settled down when she got warmed up. I adjusted the pms screw to the point where the idle is great! only problem is the pms screw is nearly all the way out and is loose....I know it wont stay in there long before it works its self out. So where do I go from now?

which primary jet are you using? I think you may need to go a little larger..

Not sure flashback...going to pull the carb off again and take a look.

Also rear cylinder seems to have a slight misfire compared to the front...I checked for leaks and everything seems fine there....Should I put the Hypercharger back on and try it again?
