Re:Proper oil level 2 Years, 10 Months ago
I was looking at various posts and came across this one. When I change my oil I put in 4.3 Quarts as specified by the manual. Now they are saying 3 quarts 12ozs. For me that is way too much oil in my bike. The question is What will happen with too much oil in the bike? How does it affect performance? What will I experience with too much oil? Should I now reduce my oil to 3 quarts and 12 ounces?

Thanks All

You should put only 4 qts in. 1700-now 3qts 12 oz. too much oil in and you could blow some seals among other things(SVS?) depending on the model you have.

oh, and make sure you drain out the oil though BOTH drain bolts!

If 4.3 qts. is good for the 1600 then surely 4 qts. plus a yearly shock treatment is good for the 1700, it sounds like there are a lot of folks on this forum that have been using this strategy w/o getting SVS.

I've never put in more that 4 L (about 1 Gal) in my 1600.

Yamaha recommends less that 4 qt as they believe that excess oil may be a contributing factor in SVS.

Take it from one that knows.... Over 4 qts caused me problems for over two years on my 04' 1700....including pulling the heads to clean everything up from the SVS. Only 4 qts now, a little MMO every now and then, and a hit of the limiter every few days....no problems for a year and a half now.

Blackroadie,

Can you go into more detail on the issues you were having with too much oil, besides SVS? Was the bike intermittently bogging down like it was losing power and running on one cylinder? Anything like that?

raiderjoe....sorry I didnt get back to you sooner. Yes it would only run on 1 cyl. at times. Almost causing me to dump it at intersections a couple times! The rear cyl always smoked out of the exhaust and was definatly sucking air....( give it the dollar bill test).... Yes it felt like I lost a lot of power when it was running down the road. Yami took it apart once and cleaned the rear valves and guides, (after months of arguing with them to pay for it)...it was out of warranty. All better now, I use amsoil 20/50 (but to each his own) lol, With the filter I put in 3.75 quarts...never more than 4. I dont trust the dipstick readings, its never the same, but it does stay on the hash marks all the time now. I just do the oil change and button her up. I know it doesnt leak or burn oil so I dont worry bout' it. Good luck with it, dont give up...its a great bike but I know this can be aggrevating! Believe me I know.... I live close to a stone quarry.

The level they are showing as optimal is high. And I can't ever get the dipstick to read consistently, even when following there step-by-step provided in the link. I think the only way to do it right, drain it properly and know what you put in!
