Bike power cutting off while riding!!! 2 Years, 10 Months ago
First time caller, Long time rider!! Ok problem started last fall, could ride for hours or just 30 - 40 minutes, seems like after starting or restarting bike I would hit the throttle then lose power (like bike choking out), sometimes will restart by popping clutch, but 90% of the time I need to turn off engine stop switch, turn back on and hit the start button, bike will start but will not run smooth and have to baby it home, The next day it will start up just fine until it acts up again. Have taken in for service, mech checked electic and fuel and found no issues! Is it possible that the decompression solenoid isn't shutting off after restart? Again bike starts everytime, but occ. while riding bike spits and sputers until I reset engine kill switch, but doesn't fix the problem until I start the bike in a day or two... Sorry so long but HELP!!!!

Thanks

Have you or anyone worked on your carb at all? Re-jetted, etc. Make sure your connections to your battery are tight also. How much do you trust your mechanic? You can take off the little cover that houses the decomp and see if it reseats after starting your bike.

Another thought: You might also have some gunk in the bottom of your tank that might be clogging up the fuel line. Do you turn the petcock to Reserve sometimes to clear out anything like that? You might also check your fuel filter at the pump.

Almost sounds like some kind of "heating up" problem. Regulator going south? Did your mechanic say your plugs looked good?

2000!!! Many mods made about 3 years ago, H/C pistons, carb, pipes and jetting and some other things done about 5 yrs ago. I am now getting a trottle pos sensor code, but with the HSR42mm Mikuni carb the sensor was bypassed and I havent had an issue in 5 years, not sure if it was just left connected and tucked away or if the bike will run without it, fuel is good, filter good, plugs good even loosened gas cap during 1 episode in case of vapor lock... does have cams done about 3 or 4 years ago, decomp does release after starting,

Have you noticed if that 30 minutes, or hours of ride time could be connected with ambient temp? In other words, are the short durations during times when it is hotter, and the longer durations when it is cooler. That would seem to be the only thing that would allow the inconsistency in failure over ride time. Could it be that the resistance of one or both coils is falling outside of the operating tolerance when they get heated up past a certain temperature? Ignitor box maybe? Check the resistance on your coils. There is a procedure in the shop manual with acceptable coil resistance values. Primary coil resistance should be 1.53 to 2.07 Ohms at 68 degrees F. Secondary coil resistance should be 12 to 18 kilo ohms at 68 degrees F.

No temps don't seem to matter, this morning it did it on a cool morning withen 5 min of leaving the house, I want to say after shifting into 3rd gear, change ignitor box and dyna 2000 over the winter hoping that would solve the problem..

i see you have had a paint-job.......check the tank-breather is not blocked with too much paint/laquer/etc.......sounds like you have built up some vacume in the tank, starving the engine of fuel, untill its left overnight and the pressure-equalises again
