I think I not be understanding the posts or Tampa and silva have differences of opinions (which is OK ).

Are you guys saying that the stock suspension with the air bag setup is better or do you differ in you recommendations.

Would the air bag not be better ??? It would raise or lower the bike but you still keep the OEM suspension.

Does the Tricky type of setup not result in a pogo effect if you are partially pumped up .... less air = softer ride ???

It's probably going to cost me well upwards $1000 so I want to be sure I get what I assume I am getting.

Doc:

Softer, Yes. Pogo, No. The R* is obviously a very heavy ride. So, it's not going to bounce rapidly. And, I'm only around 165+-, so it hardly knows I'm there.

The solid air shock actually stops the bike from bottoming, even at 0lbs. pressure. I'm betting that there's about 1/2 inch clearance between the tire and fender at that point. I need to get some clay and test it sometime...

When mine is set at 20%-25% filled, the stance is much lower, but an extremely comfortable ride. No bouncing. Just softer.
Set at 100% (120lbs) for me, the ride feels stock. All the way up, but not so much that I can't jump and down and get a little spring.
Anywhere in-between is good. Don't really spend much time there, though...

The concern that I have with the bag, is that it's still going to require a smaller shock. It would never be below stock ride height without it, right? And, is there any welding required to support the bag setup?

If you find that you don't like the air setup, you can always put it on Ebay. There's no modifications that need to be made to the bike that would cause you not to be able to go back really easily.

If you use quality components (nice brass tees, teflon tape, etc.), proper routing and do it right, I don't expect any leaks. If I put 120lbs. in it on the first of the month, it'll still be there next month.

Once suggestion though. If you look at the Tricky setup, you'll see the pressure fitting hanging off the bottom. I keep an extra for the next time I pull it on a trailer and snap that *$*$((*$ off, again. You might want to keep a spare...

NOTHD:

I found the setup you were talking about.
http://www.pacificcoaststar.com/pcs/road_star_lowering_kit.htm

It allows you to set at any height and then set the firmness independently.

Cost is almost twice the regular air setup, though. $1400.00+-

Re:Air Ride Questions 2 Years, 10 Months ago
to be clear i never actually went air ride, but i spent a lot of time researching it because i was very sure it was what i wanted....what i discovered is that the air shocks were good and no1 had any complaints bout them except for the earlier 2nd generation tricky setups were failing often

the street boutique air ride that i am talkin about which is an air bag has a bracket that mounts up where the mud guard is right now it will replace that, it hands over and loops under the frame...then you have to drill the bottom of the frame right where the stock shock mounts up...then you pull the spring off your shock and then reinstall the shock as if it was a regular setup air bag acts as your spring while the shock would eliminate any pogo effect

ultimately i didnt do air ride because im short and wanted to ride to up at a lowered height and it wasnt clear that the setup would stop me from bottoming out which is what i was lookin for

im not trying to say one is better than the other because i dont have a frame of reference, i just know from being on looneys talkin to a few people that street boutique was very highly talked about

I have a tricky air on my Warrior and it is one of the best mods I have done. I can set it for around town, highway, 2 up, or cornering. It is very comfy. Biggest thing is take your time with the install. I ran my air hose inside some rubber hosing to protect it. Make your cuts nice and straight, this is very important. Straight cuts and clean the ends before slipping them in the fittings. This will provide you with a leak free system. I can leave mine aired up for a long time without it leaking. Tricky's warranty and customer service is second to none IMO as well.

With the Tricky ... do you have to run it full up or down or can you ride anything in between?

Getting some conflicting info from other sources so I'm trying to get info from folks who I know have the setup.

Thanks,

Doc

Doc:

0-100%. Fully adjustable PSI.

I wish I had already run the bag setup to give you an honest comparison.
But, I'm pretty sold on the air-shock type(Tricky, Barons, StreetBoutique, etc.).

Hope that helps ya.

You can run it anywhere in between. When I am riding around in town I usually set it really low and air it up a little more for the highway. For carving up the twisties I air it way up for max ground clearance. I just have my switch where I can reach it easily with my left hand for on the fly adjustment. After you play with it a little you get a feel for where it needs to be. It comes with a momentary up/down toggle switch which in my opinion is junk. I went to a marine place and got a better quality switch for little money. You can also get an optional remote for the system that has two buttons on it. When you hit the up button it activates the compressor for 10 sec. the down switch realeses air as long as you hold the button. The remote is for nothing but "cool" factor though.LOL
