carb pouring gas when starting 5 Years, 2 Months ago
I was on a ride this weekend. After riding a couple of hours I stopped for some food. I was off my bike maybe 45 minutes and when I went to refire her she sputtered and died but then I smelled gas really strong. Gas was pouring from the over flow when I tried to refire again. When I would release the starter it stopped but as soon as I would hit the starter it would pour out again. I only have maybe a 2 inch hose and it was going all over my pipes. Kind of scarery to say the least. I tried several times to start her and finally it did start up with no gas pouring out. It did this 2 or 3 times later on in the day. The first thing is to get a longer hose to stop it from going on my pipes.

I am thinking the float hung up but not sure. I have had her since July last year and this is the first time this has happened. It was late fall of last year that I had a ported intake and BAK installed. The dealer rejetted and the bike ran fine and still does with no other problems. It was unseasonably warm around 85, not sure if that has anything to do with it.

What are your thoughts on why, how to stop this from happenening again.

Knowing how careful dealer wrenches are I wouldn't be surprised if they knocked the float out of whack. Or it could be a sticky float needle.

Sure does seem to be alot of this going around.

Post edited by: Musky, at: 2007/03/27 15:48

I have heard alot of horror stories about dealers, but in defense of the one here in Dalton Ga.. He is really good. And really not bad on labor. I will be moving in a few weeks and I will have a place to do most of the work myself if my job allows me. Now most of the time I just take it to him while I am working so I can ride when I am not.

Thanks guys. I have to take her in for tires next week so I will get them to check the float level and needle at the same time.
