maxair pms question 2 Years, 10 Months ago
|
|
I have my maxair pms screw out 4 turns, and although it has more thread than the stock screw,it's a little wobbly, and I wouldn't want vibration to turn it. Any tips on keeping the screw from vibrating loose? On another note, what stage exactly is removing cone and final exhaust tube and retaining plate? Hence the 4 turns out on the screw, which still doesn't get rid of decel backfiring, although bike runs pretty well. Maybe one size up on pilot jet?

Is your AIS removed? 4 turns out is quite a bit. Some decel popping is normal, from a high rate of speed. What else have you done? airkit, jetting, elevation. Tech articles should have your answer as far as stage of pipe mods.

Is it decel popping or backfire? Which Maxair screw, old or new style? Old style 1 turn out would equal to 2 turns out of stock screw. The new one is 1 to 1. Have you tried going back in (leaner) with pilot screw. No reason to change main jet unless you are using something other than the stock airbox. Putting in a K n N filter into the stock box does not require a jet change, it's the housing that restricts air flow, not the filter element. Might have to experiment with pilot screw. No air leaks at exhaust heads?

No air leaks at exhaust heads?Decel backfire. I adjusted pms screw with bike fully warmed up, and got my best idle around 4 turns. It must be the new style screw, I just got it. No intake or exhaust leaks. I'll try going from a 35 to 40 pilot jet.

curious how this one pans out. Well, pans out about the same. No air leaks, new intake o-rings,exhaust gaskets, pms anywhere from 3-4 turns, tried 40 pilot jet, same crap. Set float to 3mm, ais long gone. Bike seems to run well, but decel backfiring still persists. Might have to live with it.These backfires can get pretty nasty, depending how high I have revs up.Wonder if using a tach would be more accurate for getting a good start on pms position?

Excessive decel backfire is a sign of an exhaust leak. You're positive you have no leaks?

Positive. I put in new head pipe gaskets, old one's didn't show any signs of leakage. Smoked about a half a pack of cigs checking for leaks, and nothing to be found.Installed new o-rings on intake also, and new vacuum cap on port.I understand some backfire is normal, but it's the POW one's that aren't cool.Could I be possibly a little rich?Although there's no obvious symptoms/clues there either. My ais is long gone, stock airbox with K&N,cone and pipe removed on stock mufflers(stage 1?).

Let me get this straight ......
Stage 1 OEM pipes
OEM airbox with K&N
OEM carb except 40 pilot and maxair PMS
Loud backfire (once, twice, ???) on decel after hard acceleration.
Yes ... a tach is much better to set up the PMS.
